The significant impact of ED drugs on men's cardiac health
Medical Xpress / Huntington Medical Research Institutes / The Journal of Sexual Medicine ^ | Jan. 31, 2023 | Robert A Kloner et al

A comprehensive research study manuscript examining the impact of erectile dysfunction drugs on major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality has been published.

This study marks a significant medical milestone, as it's the first time the association between the use of PDE-5i drugs and cardiovascular health has been explored in a large population of relatively low-risk men with ED in the United States.

In this study, scientists analyzed health records of more than 70,000 men with ED. According to the findings of this large-population study, men who took Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and other drugs of the same class for erectile dysfunction (ED) experienced lower rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) including lower rates of heart failure and death due to heart disease compared to other men with ED not exposed to these drugs.

Among the men who took PDE-5i medications for ED compared to men with ED who did not take these drugs, Kloner's study identified:

39% lower rate of death due to heart disease,

22% lower rate of unstable angina,

17% lower rate of heart failure,

15% lower rate in the need for revascularization procedures such as angioplasty, stenting and bypass surgery,

13% lower rate of MACE, and

25% lower rate of death due to any cause.

Principal investigator Robert A. Kloner, MD, Ph.D. drew anonymized patient records from a large U.S. commercial and Medicare insurance claims database. The study examined records over approximately 14 years.

Due to the retrospective nature of the study, the research team cannot say anything about the cause of the benefit, only that there was an association between the exposure to PDE 5 inhibitors and lower rates of cardiovascular events. These results raise the possibility that the PDE5 inhibitors may have cardioprotective properties.

Viagra was originally a heart medication so this is really no big surprises.

Increases blood flow.

Never a bad thing…

Except for a sucking chest wound… then it’s bad.

Makes sense that a substance that improves blood flow to one area would improve flow to other areas.

25% die of no cause, or do they just not die?

A student who interned in our department had a father who was a chemist at the lab where Viagra was invented. This is the dad’s story:

They ran a clinical trial to see if Viagra would be a good blood pressure medicine.

At the end of the trial they asked the participants for their extra pills back.

For some reason none of the male participants were giving their pills up.

Surprised the researchers tried to figure out what was going on. Finally one of the trial participants told them he could go all night after taking the pills.

Well then the researchers figured out there is a market...

3+ years ago, my cardiologist, fp and nephrologist added a daily Cialis to my drug list to improve my cardiac status, with AFIB and post aorta stent protection.

“Use of Erectile Dysfunction Drugs Correlates With Multiple Heart Benefits:”

Researchers analyzed the health records of more than 70,000 men with erectile dysfunction and found that those who were prescribed Viagra (sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra (vardenafil), or similar drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors also had:

39 percent lower death rate due to heart disease
22 percent lower death rate due to unstable angina (where the heart doesn’t get enough blood flow and oxygen)
17 percent lower rate of heart failure
15 percent lower rate in the need for revascularization procedures such as angioplasty (a procedure to open up blocked arteries), stenting, and bypass surgery
13 percent lower rate of major adverse cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack

I’m doing great for an 84 year old with long term cardiac issues and in spite of Covid visits.

I didn’t read the article that closely but why do they credit the ED drugs with all the positive results when, in fact, it may be sex itself that improves overall physical and mental health?

“Viagra was originally a heart medication so this is really no big surprises.”

Actually no. It was originally looked at for Pulmonary Hypertension. Close but no cigar. Cialis is the number one medication for this today in addition for erectile dysfunction. Both are in the same class of drugs but Cialis has a longer half life and thus the dosing is less frequent.

I consider myself lucky in that I need only 1 drug, which is minimum dose Lisinopril, 10 mg pills. Doing treadmill 4 times every week has amazing health benefits for this 82 year old.

Cialis is also an effective treatment for enlarged prostate (replacement for tamsulosin.

The real lessson here is that one lives longer when one has a reason to live.
