Single women own and occupy more homes than single men in the United States, despite earning only about 83 cents for every dollar that men earn, according to a new study.
The report, by the online lending marketplace LendingTree, analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau 2021 American Community Survey with one-year estimates. It found that 10.76 million U.S. homes were owned and occupied by single women, while 8.12 million were owned and occupied by single men. Single men were found to own and occupy a larger percentage of homes in only two states: North Dakota (about 13 percent, to 11 percent for single women) and South Dakota (12 percent to 11 percent).

When my dear mother starts talking crap about my deceased dad, it’s all I can do to keep from telling her that the only reason she has a house is that she got half the value of dad’s house in the divorce settlement, and that she would likely be in a homeless shelter if she’d never married.
She also got half my dad’s 401k in the divorce and somehow mismanaged that to the point that it was worth nothing.
The other half of the 401k was (now split among the heirs) as of last year worth about 1.5 million.
So had my mother not been a stupid idiot with the 401k she got, she’d be $1.5 million richer than she is now.
“Divorcees.......................”
And widows.
“Divorcees.......................”
And widows.
A lot of this is a basic reality that more married women will stay alive/live longer than their husbands will.
Our mothers, grandmothers and most aunts outlived their husbands often by about a decade or more.
That basic reality is happening with our west coast good friends/church/group. Out of 10 couples. 4 guys have died, 3 guys are not healthy. One woman has died. One woman has not had a good post stroke recovery. The rest of the women are active and do many things such as a monthly lunch with the women in our group. They have a monthly bible study group in our home. If they don’t see each other, they call each other on the phone, basically each week.
That same %/trend is happening with our relatives in the MidWest and Southwest. The wives are living longer, and they often better quality of life spans than their husbands.
According to our Ancestry genealogy, this has been a trend for a century or more for most women in our families.
And she’d be getting $120K a year in dividends from that 401k, too.
my ex wife got a nice house and I lived in an apartment for several years until I financially recovered (although still writing her a monthly check even though our kids are grown).
Good point. There are lots of widows in my territory.
Sounds like something you just pulled out of your butt.
They need more room for all the CATS.
Do you know where that phrase originated?................
I didn’t need a house until I was married and she decided it was time to have kids.
despite earning only about 83 cents for every dollar that men earn,
How many times does that have to be debunked for the bullcrap that it is.
Applying a statistical number from an entire demographic to part of that demographic is possibly inaccurate. What are the women who are buying the homes earning?
“We will leave our current home feet first!”
“That is our plan as well—the grass does not look greener anywhere else—and we looked very hard—and carefully—over the years.”
We have really good friends out here and a couple of direct line younger relatives.
1~2 places, we considered moving to a couple of decades ago, still lack in a high quality medical care and would be really separated from most relatives and good friends.
Also, spending a couple of vacation weeks/different seasons besides the normal summer seasons eliminated many places.
At that time, we wanted to be within 1~2 hours of a medium size airport, and now that is not a need.
Where we live now, we have excellent healthcare, a great church and an ocean close enough for day trips and a good seafood dinner, then come home.
Last but not least, we have good friends and our close family members.
Covid has taught all of us how important the internet is re keeping up with relatives and past friends with minimal expenses, and the ease of sitting in our family room while contacting relatives and past friends.
We use the internet to contact our MDs, both primary and speciality. Now, that Covid seems to be winding down, we are able to discuss issues with our MDs on the phone, and to make appointments suitable to our best time and where. Our rxes are mailed to us at a good price, and they keep up with what we need.
So like you posted, “The Grass does not look greener, some where else!”
they’re well known to be good housekeepers.
I have seen many women get shackled with a do-nothing man. Those men are just pitiful. I happy to hear you landed a good one.
Wow that was a cheap one…
It’s a very OLD saying.................
