Dave Conway had a heart attack in 2018. He was only 30.
The Clintonville, Ohio, resident had been experiencing fatigue and shortness of breath, finally going to the emergency room with what he thought was pneumonia. Instead, he learned he'd had a "widowmaker" heart attack and a 100% blockage in a major artery.
"I thought people who had heart attacks or heart disease were older people who drink and smoke a lot and weigh much more than I did," Conway said.
"Recovery has been really tough, but I'm willing to do whatever my doctors tell me is needed to keep my heart safe in the future," he said in an Ohio State University news release.
Stories like Conway's are becoming more common, with studies showing heart attacks and stroke are on the rise among Americans younger than 40.
Certain healthy habits can help prevent heart problems -- but getting younger adults to accept their risks remains an obstacle.
"It is alarming that younger people don't feel that they're at risk for heart disease, but it's not surprising," said Dr. Laxmi Mehta, director of preventative cardiology and women's cardiovascular health at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
"Most young people think heart disease only happens in old people, but that's not the case," Mehta said in the release.
The medical center surveyed 2,000 Americans, finding that nearly half of those under age 45 believed they were not at risk for heart disease.
Conway himself waited days after symptoms to start seeking treatment, which is not uncommon. The survey found about 32% of Americans aren't confident they would know if they were having a heart attack.

If they only knew what crud is cursing through their veins. If they want to know, they need to take a D-dimer blood test. If they only knew what their blood profile looked like, they would be shocked.

Like um not getting the covid vax for starters
Happened to me at age 37. They don’t test for it or even look for it at that age which is why they call it the ‘widowmaker’. They look for it in older men not men who are of the age of raising a family. And this was long before the jabs. Stupid thing is I had very horrible chest pains but it wasn’t constant. Would come and go, so I went to the doctor. He said it was heartburn and prescribed Prilosec. A simple blood test would’ve revealed my elevated Troponin levels. Four months later I collapsed, blacked out, smashed my head and broke some teeth on a planter. Fortunately it was in a casino so lots of people saw and got help right away. Unfortunately they just assumed I was a drunk or on drugs - now THAT they tested for! (and I was on neither, I was there for work).
They will line up for booster #5Million and still look smugly down their nose at any one who questions their "safe and effective" meme.
They really are working overtime, or maybe AI is now...to keep the truth from coming out...
2 jabs plus 2 boosters have not stopped me from gym routine 4 days every week. But the heart attacks are attacking mostly young people who do not exercise regularly. I am old and exercise regularly. My doctor sends for EKG every year and it is perfect every year. He is confused why my heart is running so great at age 82. I keep my exercise routine secret from him.
Goodness - this is exhausting. Why can’t or won’t journalists act like journalists and ask questions? Most of the population took an experimental treatment - of which the companies have no liability and tried to hide data of their testing for 75 years.
