You can’t have roughing when an illegal forward pass is thrown. I think the worst miss was the inside hold that allowed maholmes to get the end run where the UNR was called. Had that been called the ball would have been spores +5 from the previous spot. The fouls would have been enforced in the order of occurrence (live ball dead ball) and although there would ne an automatic first down for the UNR there was only one play left. Who know what would have happened in this scenario.

I used to think that but there is plenty of unbalanced betting.

Consider the Dec 11 game Houston Texans vs. Dallas Cowboys.
Houston was +1000; Dallas was -2000.
https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/houston-texans-dallas-cowboys-20221211006/?section=game_odds

74% of the money was bet on Dallas (say $7400)
26% of the money was bet on Houston (say $2600).

If Houston had won (they nearly did), BetMGM would have had to pay out $26000, when only $10000 was bet. As it was they had to pay out $7770 - so they made $2230 for each $10k bet.

Now should you always bet “with the house?” No - I’ve not bet any real money - some weeks you can lose spectacularly if you bet with the house on every game. I’m guessing the handicapper gets fired those weeks.

You don’t have to have a pass at all for roughing to be called. It should have been off-setting penalties, at least.

By rule there must be a legal forward pass to have roughing the passer. The foul is called roughing the passer not the quarterback. There are special protections for a player who throws a legal forward pass. The foul for landing with full weight on the passer is one such special privilege of the passer. As a legal forward pass was not thrown, by rule there can be no roughing. Unnecessary roughness is a universal foul that cannot be negated by another illegal action. However unnecessary roughness is not called with the full weight landing as it is legal against all other players

Thus, by rule, this play cannot lead to any fouls with a call of roughing the laser due to the fact that an illegal pass was thrown. You are incorrect in your interpretation of the rule.

Cool. That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Are you a ref? Are you paid to control outcomes ?

Do you think any other refs are?

I do officiate multiple sports including football. The funny thing is that we see things without emotion which no one can believe as everyone else is rooting for someone. I have screwed up (kicked) many calls but never intentionally. Remember we see it once at game speed.

It is an art to officiate. And sometimes it goes sideways on you despite best efforts. No I don’t think refs are paid off. It would be pretty obvious. They just had a rough game

I’ve had a few friends who officiated various sports, at lower levels. I appreciate the dedication to the sport these guys have. Actually, I often MARVEL at just how accurate professional officials are... baseball and football. It is often truly amazing.

But, I’m sorry... I’m 100% convinced some NFL refs are “on the take”. It’s just too easy to affect the outcome of games. And, there’s just TOO MUCH MONEY at stake to let it not be controlled.

The fact that gambling is prevalent is actually the biggest reason to believe that the games are NOT fixed.

Back in high school in the 70s, arguments raged about All-Star Wrestling...real or faked. I always asked, can you bet on it?

Rigged? That’s just assinine. If it were rigged wouldn’t the Dallas Cowboys have won the championship in the last 25 years? Now point shaving is a different story.
