They portrayed a prepper as a closet gay who came out after being alone for four years and then meeting and harboring a gay refugee.

The prepper was probably gay in the game too, it’s just that they didn’t beat you over the head with it. To devote an entire episode to the backstory of such a minor character just to push the LGBTQ+ agenda is what angers a lot of fans. Episode 3 adds nothing to the story arc of the series.
In other words they stuck with the story line from the game.
I tried watching the first episode of Disney's "Willow" series, and turned it off. Sorry Warwick Davis. The script writing was horrible, character inter-action bad, and it didn't help that the "Princess" in whose house Elora Dana is being hidden, and raised as a a servant, is gay. But at least they showed their wokeness early-on, so I didn't have to waste anymore time on it. The series received a lot of criticism, not just about the lesbians.
In all honesty...that character was also gay from the video game as well...they didn’t add that to the story.
Worse than that. It was Brokeback Mountain on the small screen.
