Learning more about the endocrine system could lead to fewer cases of type 2 diabetes and obesity (Extra water reduces glucose, renal, & heart problems)

How much water do we need to drink to stay healthy? Studies of hormones are providing diabetes researchers with new answers.

Neurotensin and vasopressin are two of the hormones that are being studied by diabetes researchers.

Neurotensin is released from the gastrointestinal tract after we have consumed fat. Research has shown that neurotensin can be used as a biomarker to predict the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease.

"Studies have shown that there is an association between raised levels of the hormone after fat consumption and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver," says Olle Melander.

Melander is currently studying vasopressin in a treatment study with participants who don't usually drink a lot of water.

Vasopressin is released when the body is dehydrated, or when the concentration of salts in the blood is high. Researchers measure the stabile part of vasopressin, called copeptin, and have found there is a connection between high levels of copeptin and the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, myocardial infarction, and renal failure.

"A pilot study we carried out on healthy people showed that increased water intake reduced the levels of copeptin and fasting blood glucose concentrations. Now, we are carrying out a larger study."

Almost 700 participants have been recruited, in which they drink one and a half liters of water extra a day in addition to their normal consumption over the course of a year. In connection with the treatment, participants' blood glucose, blood pressure, and BMI (body mass index) values are measured regularly.

"The most important question we seek to answer is if an increased intake of water could reduce blood glucose levels in participants. We are also investigating if the intervention could lead to a reduction in BMI.

More water reduced vasopressin. Vasopressin also spikes blood pressure.

They are using 1.5 liters more water a day, with new study participants, after success with their pilot study.

"Our study shows that carbohydrates have a bigger effect than fat on metabolism at group level, regardless of if the individual has type 2 diabetes or not. Results indicate that a diet low in carbohydrates could be good for people who want to lose weight. A diet low in fat and high in carbohydrates does however not seem to have the same effect. We need more studies in this field before we can develop new dietary recommendations. Here, we have studied what happens at a hormonal level and therefore we can't make assumptions about long-term effects of diets,"
Yeah. Read that again. Just wow. /s

I’m over 50 now and have learned that pain is a great motivator. I have the beginnings of diverticulitis and if I don’t get enough fiber or water in a day I end up with terrible bowel pain. Therefore I’m now naturally careful to eat oatmeal with a pear or apple every day and to drink lots of water daily. The pain itself led me to these changes.

You have to drink at least twice as much, or about 7 litres/day before you are at risk.

How much water do you drink? I tend to drink almost a gallon a day. With the water in the food I eat, it’s probably at a gallon. I used to have chronic stomach pains but haven’t had them for a long time.

“...Extra Water...”
-
Is it just “water” or is it “liquids”?
Does soup, broth, milk, coffee, coca cola, or beer count?

I’ve battled off and on with diverticulosis/diverticulitis for years now. Comes and goes, usually with long breaks in between. You’re right, water and fiber are key to preventing it, though when you’re experiencing a flare up the opposite is true and low fiber is best.

The other day I also experienced a kidney stone for the first time. The diverticulitis and kidney stone produced by far the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, though the pain from each is slightly different. Both were a solid “10” on the pain scale.
