Question about a Patient Advocate
Free Reublic ^ | 1/29/2023 | BipolarBob

My father went into a nursing home to "rehab". He's actually in hospice stage. Medicare said they will pay for 20 days and no more. The VA (he's on full disability) want nothing to do with him because of politics. He is not very diplomatic. He was doing in home hospice through the VA but they dropped him because employees "felt threatened" because he had guns in the house. He's never threatened anybody but said he won't give up his guns. I told my mother to offer to remove them from the house but she is so distraught I don't know if she can reason with this bunch or not. He should go into VA hospice but they (supposedly) said they were done with him. We need a Patient Advocate to guide us through this quagmire. Any suggestions??

He's 92 and my mother is 88. They aren't the brightest and my dad can barely walk. He presents a threat to nobody. How can they deny him a room at their secured unit? He's a disabled vet.

The VA has patient advocates. If he’s 100% service connected disabled he is golden and leaving the VA is the LAST thing you should be thinking of.

And how the hell would anyone know he had guns unless he went out of his way to talk about them and scare people.

Reach out to your congressman and Senators ASAP. This is the stuff they can help with. Pray that you live in a conservative area but regardless, contact anyway.

Oh and btw, the VA deals with cantankerous 90 yr old guys every day. There’s nothing he can say to them that will anger them.

You’re not getting correct data from him.

How long has he been on “hospice”? The average hospice stay in the US is 19 days.

Not trying to be a jerk…but you are not getting the full story or accurate use of terms.

They asked if there were any guns. He doesn’t scare people but he is a blowhard.

My father in law was on in house hospice for almost two months. True, usually they don’t last long but not every case is the same.

...a lot of TV stations have consumer advocates. Consider reaching out to them to put pressure on the VA and your representatives about the lack of help for a 90 year old veteran. I’m assuming he was drafted during the Korean conflict like my father & it’s time for Uncle Sam to keep their end of the deal.

I would threaten the VA that you will take tis story to the media unless they take him in. Not a good look for the VA refusing to treat a vet on 100% disability.

The va can’t or shouldn’t reject anyone over strictly political views.

This happened with my wife’s uncle. The family basically kept punching at the VA until they relented.

Okay. If he is Service Connected disabled, then the VA will find room for him somewhere. Note he may be disabled but not service connected. That’s a different issue entirely.

Read the VA websites for nursing home arrangements. There are many, and each state has an arrangement for veterans. Even if non service connected disabled, but odds are lower in that instance. So the surfing. They have many vids.

There are people who hate VA and people who love it. I have personally never had anything but good experiences with VA, but you do have to do your homework and know the system. If you don’t know the system BE AWARE OF THAT. They have patient advocates to lead you through the process.

Yes, I am sure you can speak for every doctor at every VA with authority. I have verified data from an independent medical source (doctor) that says he's received substandard care from the VAs own x-rays and records. But . . you know better.

Hosipce RN here:to qualify for medicare hospice benefits a person needs to have a physician sign a C.T.I or certificate of terminal illness. It states that the patient’s medical prognosis is that the life expectancy is six months or less if the terminal illness runs its normal course.

See post #2.

That’s the whole story.

Go take the guns yourself. Don’t be helpless.

Don’t ever trust a patient advocate from the VA. They don’t work for you, I know from personal experience. They work to prevent lawsuits on the hospital and cover for incompetent doctors. I was told several times by my primary and his staff that I had stage 3 kidney disease, electronic records and mailed paper copies. After seeing my cardiologist, He out of the blue said I never had stage three kidney disease and showed me a graph. I knew instantly what had happened. They purged my electronic records about stg 3 KD. Always in the future print out any electronic records or screen shot them. Also be sure to get disc copies of catscans and xrays before you leave the area.

There is much more to my story of misadventures. I have been keeping a journal for several years now.

I agree with Mariner: go set his guns for safekeeping. My Dad had dementia towards the end, my brother stopped in to make him dinner and Dad didn’t recognize him. He threatened to get a gun and shoot my brother.

Brother took the guns home with him.
Not quite the same situation, I know, but at least the VA won’t be able to use that as an excuse.
