1937’s “Adventure’s End” as “Duke Slade.” Sounds like “Snake Plissken” from a later movie.

I recall a western from the 30's, that I saw in the early 70's that starred Tommy Noonan with John Wayne as an "also starring".

Can't find it on IMDb.

“The Oregon Trail” is a 1936 American Western film directed by David Howard and produced and distributed by Republic Pictures. The film stars John Wayne, Claire Trevor, and George “Gabby” Hayes. The film is based on a story by Paul Franklin and is about a group of pioneers traveling on the Oregon Trail, who must defend themselves against attacks from Native Americans and other dangers. The film was a commercial success and is considered a classic of the Western genre. However, it has been criticized for its stereotypical portrayal of Native Americans and its historical inaccuracies.

If you get a chance, watch him (don’t blink) in the 1933 movie “Baby Face” starring Barbara Stanwyck.
Precode, I think. Had me saying “Damn!” Serious adult subject matter.
