The stepfather of Tyre Nichols has called for criminal charges against the paramedics who appeared to stand by after he was savagely beaten by police, while two deputies who responded after the altercation also face investigation.
Released on Friday, video of the January 7 incident in Memphis shows at least 10 cops and two paramedics milling about casually for nearly 20 minutes as Nichols lies on the ground critically injured. He died in hospital three days later.
'Everyone -- the fire department, paramedics that came out that stood around and didn't do anything -- they're just as guilty,' Nichols' stepfather Rodney Wells told ABC News following the release of the video.
'Everyone that was active in the whole scene, the whole video, should be charged,' he added. Five Memphis cops have already been charged with second-degree murder.
Meanwhile, the sheriff of Shelby County, which includes Memphis, said that after viewing the video, he is suspending two deputies who responded to the scene following the beating, which began with a traffic stop.
Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. said in a statement: 'Having watched the videotape for the first time tonight, I have concerns about two deputies who arrived on the scene following the physical confrontation between police and Tyre Nichols.'
Bonner said he had launched an internal investigation into the two deputies, adding that they had been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the probe.

NO! STOP EXCUSING MURDER! Really they started beating on him for NOTHING. He fled because he was afraid. And apparently he was right. Stop backing the blue. They are not your friends.
I don’t see the paramedics being guilty of any crime.
Maybe they failed in their “duty”, but I wouldn’t know.
I’m willing to bet that it’s extremely hard to get qualified EMTs in that
ghetto dump of Memphis. Same for qualified police.
Going after the EMTs for bloodlust will just make Memphis crappier.
If that’s possible.
Had Tyre complied with the police rather than resisting them at every turn he would still be alive.
As “If the police have to come get you...they’re bringing and ass kickin’ with them” - Chris Rock.
So you’re OK with the officer that field-goal kicked the guy’s head...twice...while he was being held down on the ground by the other officers.
May the same happen to you.
You're taking advice from a guy that got bitch-slapped on stage in front of millions of people...and then didn't defend himself.
See my comment #44. May the same happen to you.
“The media wants their big story in the middle of winter, and democrats need a distraction. So they’re going to pour gasoline on it.”
Five police officers murdering a man is newsworthy and the videos of that murder are public property. With that being the case, it is the responsibility of the city of Memphis to release those videos and the responsibility of media outlets to broadcast the videos.
Some maybe
Most no
Yeah. Such a cheap shot
THEY’D GET THERE FASTER! 20-30 MIN FOR AN AMBULANCE CALL.
So he deserved death.
Ok.
Sorry, Constitutional rights matter.
“So why were they trying to kill this guy? It almost sounds like a gang dispute.”
It looks like that doesn’t it? the more I learn on this the more it does not make sense.
“NO! STOP EXCUSING MURDER! Really they started beating on him for NOTHING. He fled because he was afraid. And apparently he was right. Stop backing the blue. They are not your friends.”
Thank you!!! This was outright murder. These men are thugs. I will not blame the victim here, he had to have been scared to death.
From the -ice I’ve seen…no.
Certainly the cops were super-aggressive with Tyre, and indeed, killed him. But there’s still a lot we don’t know.
I would like to know why the cops were after him, and why (at least according to the first released videos) got physical with him immediately.
Its also clear Tyre would not submit. I suspect he is autistic - the more tense and violent the situation got, the more he tried to scream, to resist, to escape. Thus leading the cops to beat even harder.
Yeah, but they're not likely to let a few facts get in the way of a good riot.
isnt reckless driving a ticket?
this is not adding up
Reporting it is fine, but stoking more violence is another thing. This could go on for weeks like it did with George Floyd.
Memphis gives badges and guns to men with beards to be cops? that whole deal reeks with corruption?.
“Reporting it is fine, but stoking more violence is another thing.”
The story is out there, the videos are out there, on TV, websites and social media platforms across the spectrum.
It’s out there, it is viral and there is great public interest.
It cannot be put back into the bottle.
This. Yes, they put their lives at risk, but they represent the state. I don’t hate cops but I’m wary.
Last summer a state cop pulled me over for speeding just after I turned out of a shopping center. I hadn’t had the chance to get up to speed, but it was end of the month quota time. He started in with what he thought was intimidation—“And why are you in this area? Are you from around here? Are you familiar with our laws?” Took my license and registration back to his car, me knowing my record was perfect and he wouldn’t find anything, but he sat there for almost half an hour, I guess trying to put some fear in me. Finally came back to my car all smiles “You have a very nice day now, Mrs. —-“.
Idiot on a power trip.
