Weekly Garden Thread - January 28- February 3, 2023 [Savvy Seed Storage Edition]
January 28, 2023 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 01/27/2023 2:43:21 PM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

I remember that shingles tip but hubby would not go for it when I told him about it. Too bad we have a nice stack of them.

Cosmos grows reliably in my south of Tampa area, but tends to be short-lived.

Ageratum is basically a blue-flowered weed it grows so well here.

I spread out my Queen Sophia marigolds so I should have a lovely bed of them in about a month.

My herbs are growing well.

My asparagus looks healthy.

If we get lots of rain I should get some tasty spears. Any spear I’ve grown that’s a quarter inch or less in diameter tends to be tough, so I just let the thin ones grow.

Separate by vegetable type, put them in ziplock sandwich bags, put the bags in an opaque sterilite type box from Ikea, keep them in a top shelf in the garage out of the sunlight.

See next post...my Kansas Neighbors a little more storage space than I do!

Yeah. It could end up looking kind of, ‘Trailer Park’ in some cases, so I can see his hesitation.

My beds are tall enough and at an angle where you really don’t notice the areas between the beds when you’re looking at the garden as a whole.

I have one long edge where the garden meets the grass I would love to use the shingles as it is our main walking path. The grass creeps into the garden all the time. Say I was just looking at tius and thought if your country type decor I thought you or others would like it. Turning old dressers into seating.

This evening, I picked up what I knew I could get locally, so didn’t mail order.

Only thing I need now—and that’ll be local, too— are seed potatoes. Too soon for that.

I did NOT see that!! I have an old pack of roofing shingles just laying out on a junk pile, too! They won’t be enough, but I can buy another pack. Excited to have a virtually weed free garden!

Diana in Wisconsin : " This shoe organizer has 24 pockets and was about $6 from Walmart. I also have one over the pantry door (on the inside),..for storage, too.
And it does. Yay! "

Excellent idea done 'on the cheap' for those of us who do better organization with visual reminders !
That makes for a good and constant garden reminder and schedule for plant 'starts'! Super idea !

Oooo! LOVE The Robin’s Egg Blue bench! That’s a neat site. Bookmarked, for sure!

Also, I only have ‘Country-Type Decor’ because everything I own is old and hand-me-down from the Mid-1800’s and forward.

My ancestors never parted with a thing. ;)

But, yes. I prefer ‘Country’ over ‘Modern’ except for electric appliances and indoor plumbing, LOL!

I’ve got one 3# bag of taters ‘booked’ (German Butterball) but if I see the reds I need (Red Norland) locally, I’ll grab them. :)

Oh, goodie! I had to buy a second pack to finish covering all of mine, too. Mom got them for FREE - she just asked at her local lumberyard if they had any broken packs they were discounting and the guy gave them to her...and carried them to her van for her, too.

I do have one row that is still covered with a piece of plywood that fit there perfectly. Toads have taken up residence there, so I’m leaving that row alone. They’re so cute! And useful. I would never harm a toad, though I did make the mistake of marrying one, once-upon-a-time, LOL!

You’ll be pleased. I am. Really keeps the weeds down.

Ethanol-free gas stores longer. It is available also in sealed gallon cans and will keep for a very long time (years).

Also, additives like Seafoam and Stabil will lengthen in-tank fuel life. Gas or diesel.

And remember, water will sit on the bottom of the tank and can be easily removed with a transfer pump.
