Dietary nitrate—found in beetroot juice—significantly increases muscle force during exercise

A new study has found that consuming dietary nitrate—the active molecule in beetroot juice—significantly increased muscle force while exercising.

While it is known that dietary nitrate enhances exercise, both boosting endurance and enhancing high-intensity exercise, researchers still have much to learn about why this effect occurs, and how our bodies convert dietary nitrate that we ingest into the nitric oxide that can be used by our cells.

To help close this gap traced the distribution of ingested nitrate in the saliva, blood, muscle and urine of ten healthy volunteers, who were then asked to perform maximal leg exercise. The team wanted to discover where in the body the dietary nitrate was active, to give clues on the mechanisms at work.

An hour after the nitrate was taken, participants were asked to perform 60 contractions of the quadriceps—the thigh muscle active while straightening the knee—at maximum intensity over five minutes on an exercise machine. The team found a significant increase in the nitrate levels in muscle. During the exercises, researchers found this nitrate boost caused an increase in muscle force of seven percent, compared to when the participants took a placebo.

Andy Jones, "Our research has already provided a large body of evidence on the performance-enhancing properties of dietary nitrate, commonly found in beetroot juice. Excitingly, this latest study provides the best evidence to date on the mechanisms behind why dietary nitrate improves human muscle performance."

Previous studies had found an increase of nitrate in tissue and body fluid after ingesting labeled dietary nitrate. By using the tracer in the new study, researchers were able to accurately assess where nitrate is increased and active, and also shed new light on how the nitrate we consume is used to enhance exercise performance.

I have read where 25% of the nitrate to nitrite conversion in our bodies is from bacteria in our mouths. Also, it has been found those bacteria reduce blood pressure by several points.

What does this mean? To best use nitrate reduce your blood pressure and give you an exercise boost, don’t use mouthwash.

Viagre boosts nitric oxide.

A co-worker’s dad was in on the development. Here’s the story he tells:

They had a clinical trial for use of Viagra as a blood pressure medication. At the end of the trial nobody wanted to give the extra pills back. They had all kinds of excuses.

Then one guy told them what it did.

Wow, I know that beets are going to be a big feature in my spring garden. I left a long row last Fall in the garden and hope some of them survived.

This is not an ad!

I listen to Howie Carr. About a year ago I heard him pushing Super Beets. I’m not fat, don’t smoke and exercise daily but my blood pressure was in the 150s.

I decided to try SuperBeets. I mix it with ground flax seed and drink in once a day. I’ve done this for about a year and a half.

My bp is now in the 120s. It took about 6 weeks for my bp to drop to this level.

Finally something that does what it promises to do.

Seven percent?!?! Pfft, and for that I'd have to actually drink beet juice??? No thanks.

Hell, when I was a kid, the government was trying to scare everyone off of lunch meats because they contained nitrates. Imagine my surprise when while checking out if this was ths same thing (it is), it turns out that all those green vegies they government loves us to eat so much is higher in nitrates and nitrites than that bacon or salami the government was so certain was going to kill us. Imagine that it LOWERS blood pressure!

Apparently they may be causing blindness in older men. So just use them until you have to wear glasses.

You must be fairly young and no major ailments. At 83 I would love my BP to go down but with other issues, I doubt it would be good. Looks like it’s the usual medication that I will be subjected to.

Wow...”Because antiseptic mouthwashes eradicate the oral bacterial flora, this nitric oxide-generating pathway is abolished, which may result in nitric oxide-deficient conditions potentially leading to life-threatening complications such as ischemic heart events or sepsis.”

BUT, the FLCCC says “Antiseptic antimicrobial mouthwash: gargle twice daily (do not swallow). Choose mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine, povidone-iodine, cetylpyridinium chloride, or the combination of eucalyptus, menthol, and thymol.”

Choose your poison: ischemic heart events or COVID.

Tough choice!
