Too much money ‘available’ for 4 year degrees.
Degree requirements should really only matter for applicants who are like 25 and under. Anyone older than that should have enough work experience to either qualify or not qualify.
Here’s another “increase employment” idea: Reduce unemployment benefits dollar amount and the length of time you can draw them.
So, the requirement to have a license of some sort or to prove that you’re somewhat proficient in a certain task or procedure, by passing some type of exam, has been removed?
Not saying I necessarily disagree with the proposal, what happens when something goes sideways and someone wants to sue?
“Sorry sir/mam, you went to someone that said they were good at something, turns out they don’t know anything about anything, you’re screwed. Next.”
To style hair in some states requires 2000 hrs, a whole year at 40 hrs per week
You can become a paramedic and pronounce someone dead and administer powerful medications with 500 hours training
Yup—now if they can just ban discrimination against white people....
Easing the degree requirement is one thing.
That benefits the bureaucracy a number of ways.
What PA DIDN’T get rid of, an example...
I’ll cheer when a state gets its own damn government off people’s necks.
That guy was backed by the RINO’s and Democrats of my state and it is what it is.
I dislike the political realities of this state.
Reality is what we need to face in this matter of government jobs.
My wife worked in the government bureaucracy here in PA without a college degree learned the ropes of her department could have been the boss but didn’t have the degree.
In her clerical role she did leadership work for the less competent college educated leadership.
Outside the government my son who left school in 9th Grade makes more money than I did working two jobs because he was promoted into his salaried supervisory job based on his experience.
It’s the world we live in today education can help career advancement but it’s not the only way up.
I actually see very few degree requirements.
This harm women? Don’t women get more degrees than men?
Many of the degree requirements came in when courts determined that testing of prospective employees was discriminatory. If you can’t test an employee, you can’t require degrees and you can’t fire the unqualified the only way to hire will be to go through a contracting agency and try them out for a month or two. Then you can make a formal offer. But by then the employee may realize his boss is an idiot and not want a full time job.
I agree that the stringent college requirements can be burdensome and in a lot of cases unnecessary, but I do not agree with the government getting all mixed up in it. To me, that’s the worst solution.
I’ve always found it ironic that Bill Gates created Microsoft yet because of degree requirements he would not be able to get most jobs at his own company.
Same here. Far too many jobs now require college degrees that didn't in the past.
Both of my parents (pre-Boomer "Silent Generation") landed nice-paying, white collar jobs in the defense industry without having college degrees.
Of course, they were the first ones laid off during the defense spending cuts following the Cold War.
Nonetheless, good effort on behalf of Shapiro and one that many GOP governors should emulate.
Government is not a place to become rich or create a retirement plan. No more pensions. If government employees want to save for retirement, then let them do it with their own money. By the way, it’s possible to retire from the Commonwealth with guaranteed monthly pension income greater than the salary made while working. It’s time to reduce the number of lazy ass government employees.
It is a smart move, and there are many resources out there for employees to continue their education and obtain practical certifications for professional advancement.
