We have always been told that automobiles are the safest places to be in a Thunderstorm. What about electric cars?
Electric cars are no safe to be in in thunderstorms or in fair weather.
Electric Car: “I AM the storm.”
Why would you wonder? Do you think that electric cars have special, electrically conductive tires? I suppose it’s probably a good idea to unplug your Tesla along with your TV set, your microwave etc.
No problem with thunder!
Beware of lightning!
Yes - until it explodes in a ball of fire.
water causes them to catch fire,,,,
Yes, if the body is metal they make a decent faraday cage just like any other car. In neither case would you want to touch a metal part during a lightning strike.
Isn’t it kinda late to ask this question, now that thousands have been produced and bought?
You are told that because of the four tires
LOL
For all cars....
What happens if you drive over a live wire?
It is not safe for you to drive over a downed power line. The electric utility wire could get caught in your wheels or undercarriage, causing you to pull down other power cables, utility poles, or electrical equipment. The extreme heat from a downed wire could melt your tires or cause them to catch fire.Jul 15, 2022 from electrocuted.com
From PG&E:
What if a power line falls on your car——
Stay inside your car. The ground around your car may be energized.
Sound the horn, roll down your window and call for help.
Warn others to stay away. Anyone who touches the equipment or ground around your car can be injured.
Use your mobile phone to call 9-1-1.
Wait until the fire department, police or PG&E workers tell you it’s safe to get out of your car before exiting the vehicle.
If your car is in contact with a fallen power line and a fire starts, follow these guidelines when exiting your vehicle:
Remove loose items of clothing.
Keep your hands at your sides and jump clear of the vehicle, so you are not touching the car when your feet hit the ground.
Keep both feet close together and shuffle away from the vehicle without picking up your feet.
Now the all important classic CHiPS episode Hustle in which the real actor Broderick Crawford is pulled over and recognized and praised. “I used to watch your show over and over and over.” Signs the ticket.
Then “After Getraer arrives, he informs Jon that Broderick Crawford wants his pen back. When an accident report comes in during the briefing, Getraer sends out Ponch and Jon.
They arrive at the accident scene to find a car has struck an electric pole and a water line. Someone runs up to help and gets shocked when he steps on the wet pavement. After removing an electric shock victim, Ponch removes electric lines from the car while Jon jumps on the car to keep the woman inside until it’s safe.”
So how big of a puddle can an electric car drive through safely?
You may want to keep a window open just in case it gets hit.
“What if a power line falls on your car——”
I would drive a good bit so the wires fall off the car.
That’s how you become Lithium Man!!!!
I wouldn’t be in one on a clear, sunny day.
May the odds be ever in your favor,,,,
‘They’ say it is safe because it is grounded by the tires.
