For decades, the animated M&M's candy mascots dominated small screen ads. Whether they're fainting from seeing Santa, griping about each other in board meetings, or trying to disable a rocket, the multi-colored characters are used to bringing their shenanigans to audiences at large. This might be why so many people were immediately up in arms after the company announced the iconic spokescandies are being replaced by comedy queen Maya Rudolph for an upcoming Super Bowl ad, saying it's all an effort to sidestep past controversies.
News of Maya Rudolph's partnership with the M&M's brand came via a statement from the company that was shared on Instagram. The message explaining the surprising switch-up alluded to consumer reactions to various changes made to the characters in recent years, such as the Green M&M's design changing to tone down perceived-as-sexual details, as well as the introduction of the Purple M&M. According to the press release, the company is putting the mascots on an "indefinite pause" and opting to move forward with Rudolph in their place. It all seem a bit too tongue in cheek to be real, and yet...
While appearing on Today, Rudolph teased that "lots of fun" will be had in regards to the upcoming Super Bowl ad, and shared how she felt to be the brand's "Chief of Fun" spokesperson, saying:
"It’s a very fun pairing if I do say so myself. I think little Maya would be thrilled to get to work with M&M’s."

No, the marketing department and consultants are young wokesters who have destroyed years of a successful product promotion campaign based on animated characters by introducing gay sensibilities where they do not belong. This has destroyed decades of work and millions in promotional expenditures because their consumers do not want this crap served with their candy. They need to hire adults to run their marketing efforts and hire new consultants who are not slaves to woke bullshit.
It was because they released a picture of the green M&M sitting on a bench holding hands with another female M&M, implying that they are lesbians.
Maya Rudolph is not a "nobody."
Maya Rudolph has been with her male partner since 2001, and they have four children. Because she has produced some LGBT shows merely follows from the facts that she is a liberal progressive, half black and half Jewish, living on the West Coast; it does not prove that she is a lesbian.
If you don’t know who Maya Rudolph is, your “general knowledge” score is pretty low.
Her mom is Minnie Riperton, singer from the 70’s. But she is very successful on her own.
In any event…the whole thing is a promo for the Super Bowl. It’s targeted to get people worked up. If anyone has had their emotions moved a millimeter over this—congratulations you’ve been manipulated.
This will go down in the history of advertising as one of the most effective advertising campaigns.
Maybe not but I’ve never heard of her - couldn’t pick her out of a lineup if your life depended upon it.
I used to joke that my pets had better health care than I did. But then that changed (gradually and then suddenly). My kitties both went to the Rainbow Bridge at a fine old age, but I am taking a break from having pets. Not sure which way the world is going, but it isn't good.
