MILTON, Fla. -- Milton police are investigating Monday after a body was discovered in an unmarked grave in the Historic Milton Cemetery.

The body was discovered Monday morning after members of a funeral home were digging a grave in preparation of a funeral.

VIDEO AT SITE.....................

Milton Police Chief Tindell told WEAR Monday that cemetery records do not show that a body was buried in the location where the discovery was made.

Chief Tindell says the burial could be at least 20 years old.

Chief Tindell mentioned that there was a granite slab weighing more than 1,200 pounds over the burial plot.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Medical Examiners Office have been called to the the scene to exhume the remains.

Chief Tindell says there is currently nothing that they have seen to suspect foul play.

According to the cemetery's website, some of the graves date back to the 1830's.

“Chief Tindell mentioned that there was a granite slab weighing more than 1,200 pounds over the grave.”

There’s your first clue, genius boy. Placing a “ledger” is expensive and only done AFTER a burial.

It's a problem. Doing genealogical research, you quickly find out which cemeteries had a good record system and which did not.

It's complicated by the fact that many less well-off families couldn't afford a monument or grave marker. It might be a bit confusing on Judgment Day.

"Lots of these old cemeteries have really poor records."
I grew up across the road from a Catholic church established in 1774 on land owned by the mother of the first American archbishop, John Carroll. Playing in the graveyard as a child, a grave digger showed me a silver coffin handle he found while digging a new grave. He said there wasn’t anything else, just the coffin handle.

If you have a body to get rid of a cemetery is actually a great place to do so. If you think about it.

Yes, it is. It is right down the street about 100 yards from my doctor’s office and Santa Rosa Medical Center.

I got a laugh every time I pass it, thinking, “How convenient!”................

I just read one of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries where a man was buried alive in a small hole by a jilted lover who helped him remove the very large stone cover, then when he was in the hole to retrieve the treasure buried there, she jerked out the stick that held the stone up...............

Yes, another Sherlock Holmes mystery I read last week was where a wealthy woman had disappeared and the kidnappers were going to bury her alive inside a casket with a false bottom with a really old dead person on top so it would not be questioned..............

I’m thinking it’s just bad record keeping over the years. This cemetery dates back to before the Civil War.............

Books would have spotted the plan as soon as he so much as glanced at that “extra deep” coffin. There are three or four such improbabilities in the Holmes stories.

Holmes never saw the coffin until they went to the house to rescue the lady. He merely deduced the extra large coffin since the woman at the funeral parlor said it was a special order and took extra time to deliver..............

Didn’t Holmes and Watson go into the house and see the old lady in the coffin?
