MILTON, Fla. -- Milton police are investigating Monday after a body was discovered in an unmarked grave in the Historic Milton Cemetery.
The body was discovered Monday morning after members of a funeral home were digging a grave in preparation of a funeral.

Milton Police Chief Tindell told WEAR Monday that cemetery records do not show that a body was buried in the location where the discovery was made.
Chief Tindell says the burial could be at least 20 years old.
Chief Tindell mentioned that there was a granite slab weighing more than 1,200 pounds over the burial plot.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Medical Examiners Office have been called to the the scene to exhume the remains.
Chief Tindell says there is currently nothing that they have seen to suspect foul play.
According to the cemetery's website, some of the graves date back to the 1830's.

Lots of these old cemeteries have really poor records. Often it will be a family plot of say 16’ x 16’ but only two people buried there. After a period of time (20 years??) of no activity the cemetery can sell the remaining burial sites in that plot. But the actual location of the two people buried in that plot might just be a guess.
My sister worked at a cemetery and the digger was always coming across old bones. My sister said “the ground shifts a lot”. She was probably told that and believes it. No - they just have poor records.

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Police in Arkansas said they are investigating a “suspicious death” after discovering the body of a man in a camper.
According to an incident report, the body of 39-year-old Guillermo Guzman was discovered at a home in Little Rock with “clear signs of being deceased” on Monday morning.
Due to the subject displaying unknown and suspicious trauma to his person, homicide detectives and CSSU were notified and responded,” the report noted.
The narrative went on to say that homicide detectives requested the scene be secured and a search warrant was obtained for the property.
Police said that the Pulaski County Coroner arrived but did not observe any clear signs of suspicion or foul play.
Authorities noted that the “suspicious trauma” on Guzman’s body appeared to be caused by post-mortem animal predation, which means animals had fed on the body after his death.
Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.
After further investigation, detectives could not conclusively determine the cause of death; therefore, the investigation continues pending the outcome of the autopsy,” police said.
And if they dig about 6 feet further down they may find another one.

Change ownership one or two times, remove monuments and lose records to be able to resell a plot years down the road.
May be difficult to remove all the library books that document cemeteries though.

If the soil is sandy, it does shift a lot, which could be the case in Florida. There was an incident about forty years ago where a retired/almost forgotten cemetery needed to be relocated due to development, and the developer had to basically remove all of the soil to find the coffins due to the shifting due to sandy soil. Some of the coffins were bunched together and all had moved. The cemetery was very near the ocean.
