“Sweden is not yet in NATO (and if Turkey and Hungary get their way, it never will be), so it has no say one way or the other as to Finland’s acceptance into NATO.”

In addition to Finland, Sweden also won’t let Sweden join. But they COULD both join...just send some Terrorists back home.

I thought I read that Sweden was in but not Finland.

Finland has plenty of history of Russian aggression. They remember the winter war of 1939. The Soviet version of Russia took about a fifth of Finnish land, but Finland survived, then thrived, as the Soviets descended into communist he!!.

“They do appear to be spooked. Didn’t they once vow never to join NATO?”

For 15 years at least Finland has been watching Russia’s aggression against its neighbors. And Finland also knows that Russia is wholly untrustworthy, and has made threats against Finland. Finland knows that neutrality means squat to Russia.
Finland is proceeding accordingly.

“I thought I read that Sweden was in but not Finland.”

The problem that Turkey has is Sweden (due to them harboring terrorists), but either Turkey is also holding up Finland, or Finland won’t join unless Sweden is allowed to join.

That’s my understanding.

You don’t know Turkey. Turkey will play the West off against Russia. Turkey doesn’t care about some Kurds in Sweden; what it cares about is what it can extract from both NATO and Russia. It’s in their DNA. Have you ever been to a Turkish bazaar? I have. I spent almost two years in Turkey.

Do you mean the Minsk agreement that called for Russia to withdraw from eastern Ukraine, but it refused to do so? That one?

Russia withdrew their forces from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as required by Clause 2 of Minsk 2 agreement. This is why Ukraine attacked them! Here's a map of Russian forces positioned around Ukraine in January 2022. Notice that Russian forces are in Russian territory, outside of the two eastern provinces.

“Turkey doesn’t care about some Kurds in Sweden”

We’ll see - Turkey’s been pretty solid on this, and thanks to the Neocon War in Ukraine, Turkey has moved CLOSER to Russia, since Sweden made their NATO move.

Actually, Sweden has the majority of the Kurds. Finland will get in before Sweden. But it may mean that Turkey gets out of NATO.

Russians are liars?

What about the political inhabitants of Washington DC?

There are more liars per square foot in DC than in ANY part of Russia.

Finland knows Putin thinks his historic and quasi-religious mission is to restore the Imperial borders which means Finland. Poland & the Baltic states would be in that list too.

Personally, I think NATO in its present form is obsolete. I think there ought to be as many as four overlapping alliances such as a Baltic nations alliance, an Eastern\Central Europe alliance, a Southern Europe\Mediterranean alliance and an Atlantic alliance. European nations could be in one or more of these alliances depending on how they perceive their interests or needs.

I’d cut that deal. Of course, it might drive Turkey into the arms of Iran, and they historically hate each other!

Turkey has historic ethnic delusions toward its ancestral homeland in Central Asia - Turkmenistan and other ethnic Turk areas east - such as those in the Russian Federation.

It isn’t really that they were spooked. Finland is a trivial nation and is lead by a very young female who is not in a state of maturity. Women that age have a deep need to belong. There was a clique, a club she was not part of and she got an invitation.

Nothing thrills a female that age more than acceptance by a group. Simple as that.

“Oh, so Serbia and Libya are members of NATO now?”

No, they were attacked by “defensive” NATO.

And by trivial I mean in the larger sense. They do not supply the world with anything more vital than maybe a Nokia phone. They are not important for oil, transit, trade, etc. To me that is why they can afford to sit up there and elect a 30 year old woman as Prime Minister. That is simply not the act of a consequential people facing great challenges and carrying huge responsibilities.

So they were not invaded and forcibly annexed by NATO then.

The governments supporting Ukraine are worse than the Russians. A Ukrainian victory is a victory for their communist, LGBT, and green fanaticism.

“Russia withdrew their forces from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, as required by Clause 2 of Minsk 2 agreement.”

No, it didn’t. It also didn’t pull out its heavy weaponry, as required. Hell, Russia even argued that it was not an involved party and thus was not required to abide by the Agreements!

Here is a summary of the Agreements, with various footnotes and references. Those especially are well worth reading.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minsk_agreements

Bottom line: The Minsk Agreements were flawed from the get-go, and NO ONE fully complied with them, and pointed fingers as to why they didn’t.

The Minsk Agreements were not worth the paper they were written on, and everyone knew it. But that’s what happens when parties rush to get something done, JUST TO GET SOMETHING DONE.

The bottom line, Russia should have stayed the hell out of Ukraine’s internal issues, because Russia was NOT an impartial player, especially after it had invaded and illegally annexed Crimea BEFORE either of the Minsk agreements were even drafted.

Good. Call, write or email your senators and Representative. Publish articles advocating the United States either leaving NATO or disbanding it.

NATO is a tool. A military alliance treaty.

Blaming NATO is like blaming the gun, not the criminal.

It’s the president and a few of the European leaders who really direct NATO, like a criminal using a 9MM.
