NFL world blasts officials for horrible penalty call
The Comeback ^ | Jan 15, 2023 | Reice Shipley

The New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings had a back-and-forth game on Sunday, but a horrible roughing the passer penalty almost played a huge role in deciding the game.

The play occurred late in the fourth quarter with the Vikings trailing 31-24 and driving. New York defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence applied pressure on Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins, forcing an errant pass and sending Cousins to to the ground.

It looked like any normal hit on a quarterback, but officials flagged Lawrence for a roughing the passer call, which seemed completely ridiculous in real time and worse when looking at the replay.

Without the penalty, the Vikings would have faced a critical third-and-four. With it, they got a new set of downs.

The NFL world was justifiably outraged at the call.

“Roughing the passer… Tough look for football as a whole normally. Let’s fix that this off-season,” tweeted former NFL punter Pat McAfee.

Contact began while the ball was still in QB hand. Then the big bear just rolled him gently over.

Like Alex Karras famously said: “Let’s just put little dresses on ‘em”.

“ Of all the plays that took place yesterday, nothing will compare to the Ravens robbing themselves of a touchdown by inches and watching the fumble returned all the way.”

As a Bengals fan, it was a beautiful thing. The Ravens were a tough team though. That roughing the kicker call was pretty iffy though. What an actor.

Which just proves a lot of these rules are ridiculous. Judgement should be used regarding if physics cannot stop it from happening. Following rules by the letter rather than spirit is what makes many of these spurious.

Well, as a Lions fan, it is a requirement to watch through that lens :) I learned to do it a few years back.

Exactly.

In the old days, they mostly just acted like it was the job. Doing what they’re supposed to do.

Johnny Unitas, 1958 Championship - sudden death overtime win - walks away from end zone chaos off the field.

They cost the Lions a playoff spot with their horrible calls in the Seahawks-Rams game.

Why didn’t Harbaugh use the time outs? Strange ending there.

It’s not THAT BAD of a call... I’ve seen plenty worse.

He did throw him to the ground AFTER the ball was thrown, but how was he to know, he was in the process of tacking him.

I stopped watching football years ago due to the rules becoming so convoluted the entire game became a referees’ game, not a players’ game.

That was shortly before the kneeling started.

By the rules, it was roughing the passer and I had no problem with it even though I was rooting for the Giants. You are no longer allowed to hit the QBs helmet, even just to get at the football. It’s not how I like it but it is the rule.

That said, we should have won more games earlier in the season.

No they shouldn't have, they're the Lions......

Over the past 31 years, the lions have made the first round playoffs only 9 times and their only win was 1991. And their prior appearance was in 1983 which they lost also.

As long as the Fords are happy with ticket sales, the lions will always be losers......

I stopped watching all except college football during the 3rd quarter of the 4th game of the 2017 season.

Pro ball has devolved into pro wrestling - serving betters, advertizers and a few that attend the games.

Certainly lots of scared refs afraid to make a call—or non-call. On the positive side with generally only one game proceeding a time, and all of HQ’s officiating overlords concentrating on one game vs. 8-10 at once during regular season, reviews were almost instantaneous. Much improved.

One announcer mentioned the expedited reviews. If delays are a problem, look for the NFL to expand HQ’s officiating staff.

A couple of super bowls back the 49rs ran to the end zone and posed for the crowd after making a good defensive play.

They ended up losing the game.

I'm just glad it didn't change the outcome of the game. NFC Central (Packers) fan here and I was explicitly rooting for the Giants.

What the Minnesota Vikings proved is that they were simply the best team in one of the worst divisions of the NFL. They were going NOWHERE in the playoff's.

The refs were clearly trying to keep the game close and ratings up.

What’s the problem?

It was absurd. How is he supposed to sack the QB if he doesn’t bring him down while the QB has the ball? That the QB was able to throw it away as he was being brought down doesn’t make this ‘roughing the passer’.

And not too much later in the game, similar sack attempt and NO "roughing the passer" call against Cousins.

Roughing the passer is way too subjective and that's the kind of call that should be overturned by the "quick instant replay" or whatever it's called.

Just glad it didn't change the outcome of the game, seeing it was apparently a hometown ref that made that call 'n all that.
