Republicans’ contrived outrage over the Biden administration’s promotion of climate-friendly stoves has me thinking about how unprepared they are for the realities of our high-tech future.
Because climate-conscious appliances and devices aren’t going anywhere.
Humans’ continued obsession with technology - whether that’s stoves or blockchain platforms to trade goods or high-powered game consoles - is terrible for the environment.
Merely producing these things often requires mining for resources, as well as an assembly process that leaves a major carbon footprint. But the energy to run these things, multiplied across the millions of people who use them, really adds up.
That’s why I was intrigued by this article in Ars Technica, about Microsoft’s recently announced changes to its Xbox gaming console that the company says will make it more eco-friendly.
The changes, Microsoft said Wednesday, “will create opportunities for our collective community of gamers to make choices to reduce environmental impact while gaming.”
Essentially, the company is rolling out a power-saving feature that will allow a console linked to the internet to read local energy consumption data provided by the user’s nearest power grid. The console then uses that data to schedule Xbox updates and maintenance for times when the most renewable energy is available.

I have a better idea. Smash them all and then less energy will be spent on x-box usage.
Smash my Xbox and I’ll smash your computer. Seems fair.
Insert Johnny Cash middle finger pic.
If that feature cannot be disabled, it’s a dumb decision on their part.
I won’t play and MS can FO.
I never said I would smash a thing.
My comprehension skills are top notch. You want people’s property smashed. If someone WERE to smash my property that I spent my hard-earned money on, I would, in turn, wreck something of theirs.
No they are not. You only think they are.
If they were top notch, you wouldn't claim I was talking about smashing anything. For I was really talking about Apple smashing their own production of of equipment that produce the xbox, along with their other products, before they even produce any more of them.
Their concern about the climate change BS is all virtual signaling projection of concern. If their concern were real, they would stop producing their products.
Do you now get it?
I live to hate on Xbox. Just another typical crappy Microsoft product. My sons love it but I hate it. The time it takes to load updates is frustrating and it is full of glitches that have to be troubleshooted.
Just went to a thrift store where old Nintendo games are bought and sold. $20, $30, $60 price tags. The vintage stuff still rocks, I guess.
Yeah I’m on two minds on that. I tried playing the old N64 Zelda ocarina in time, and it got a little tedious. Things have improved on that front. But the old Yoshi and Paper Mario on N64 are superior to the newer versions. Didn’t much like the new Paper Mario.
I guess some games belong in the past but others we forgot how fun they were. I have the nintendo online subscription so you can access a lot of the old N64 games. Waiting for them to re-introduce James Bond Goldeneye.
