Passengers on an Amtrak train were stranded in South Carolina after their train took a detour due to another train derailing.
Some passengers fresh out of patience appeared to have started calling the police, per ABC News.
A train conductor was heard telling passengers they weren't being held hostage, per videos seen by ABC News.
An Amtrak trip from Virginia to Orlando turned into a nightmare this week after passengers were kept on board the train for more than 29 hours.
ABC News reported that the Auto Train in question left Virginia at 5 p.m. on Monday, and was meant to reach Florida by 10 a.m. on Tuesday. However, the Amtrak train was taken off its normal route after a CSX freight train collided with a vehicle on the tracks during the South Carolina leg of the journey — resulting in the Amtrak Auto Train needing to be diverted off-course, reported ABC News.
This was just the beginning of the mess: the Amtrak passenger train's journey was then halted in South Carolina. Passengers had to wait for a certified backup crew to arrive because there are specific crews who can operate Auto Trains, per ABC News. Additionally, safety laws control how many hours train employees are allowed to work.
Some passengers who were out of patience with Amtrak after being delayed for hours also appeared to have started calling the police, ABC News reported.

There was a case several years ago where an AA flight headed to Dallas landed in Austin sitting for hours and would not let passengers headed to Austin deplane. The called 911.
Efficiency…
Was it in the boonies? I guess they could have gotten out and walked, so, not hostages.
In 1980, I took a round trip on Amtrak from Los Angeles to Ann Arbor, Mich. The train was 14 hours late arriving and 12 hours late returning. Afterwards, I vowed that I would never again ride Amtrak, and I never have.
As the people screamed in unison “SAVE US PETE BUTTIGEIG”
“ABC News reported that the Auto Train in question...”
This is a train that carries the passengers vehicles also, so when they get to destination they can drive.
I imagine most wouldn’t want to leave their car behind.
Leave the train and you probably forfeit you car on the train.
Hostage to the unions work rules
Only in America. The America of today is demonstrably and self-evidently genetically, socially, culturally inferior to the America 50 years ago.
If you walk off that train, there’s a catch.
Your auto is being moved via that train to Florida..
So, you would need to rent a car to drive to Florida and retrieve your auto as it’s on the same train as you..
I believe the only passengers allowed on the ‘Auto train’ are those who have their autos being transported by said train.
It’s called an Amtrak adventure for a reason!
Isn’t that what any good hostage-taker would tell the hostages?
Another miracle from Pete Buttplug! Will his suck-cesses and tales (or is that “tails”?) ever end?
Dagny Taggart would be outraged.
Not a single Amtrak employee will be fired over this, just like at the FAA this morning and the screw-ups at Southwest and all over corporate America.
The country descends more and more into chaos with non-functioning systems but the leadership remains in power, and is amply rewarded, just like the pols who just passed the $1.7 trillion porkulus package.
And ordinary people seem completely incapable of changing it.
No. Trains a lot like airplanes. It’s too “risky” for you to be let out. Happened to me a few times, commuter and Amtrak. You might trip and twist your ankle.
I figure there have to be safety NAZI fed laws in place making them keep you hostage.
Same locomotive as any train,it’s the union that required them to wait for a special crew to be sent out.
Amtrak will apologize for the inconvenience by giving the passengers vouchers for more of the same.
Not every person has a car. It’s not a requirement to ride.
It’s got to be federal safety rules. They do this all the time. You’re not allowed to leave unless at a good station or your conveyance is the one in trouble!
