It's official: Microsoft confirms the end of Windows 7 and 8

After years of anticipation, today officially marks the end of Windows 7 and 8/8.1, Microsoft has confirmed.

The aged operating systems will no longer receive Microsoft security updates from today, January 10, 2023, marking the end of their official lifespan.

Anyone using the software will now be at risk of cyberattacks from criminals exploiting current and future security flaws and vulnerabilities, and is urged to update to newer Windows versions - particularly Windows 11 - immediately in order to stay safe.

Hide in my basement? It’s where I have an old tower computer with Windows 7 as the operating system.

2012r2 is good, but I used 2008 and liked it for long time

XP was probably the best operating system Microsoft ever sold.

[[Kind of like leaving two Cleveland Browns’ tickets on your dashboard. Your biggest risk is someone breaking into your car and leaving two more. ]]

LOL- too funny!

I wasn’t including server versions, as I never used them on my home systems, and didn’t count what I used at work only. I toyed with getting 2012r2 just to avoid bloatware and to cut down on Microsoft tracking, but didn’t see an affordable way to get a legit copy.

I want to reload either windows 98se or ME otherwise I’ll prefer a world without windows or gates.

“You can’t even really watch you tube on windows XP anymore. So they force you out.”

I’m on an 11-year-old HP running Windows 7/IE 11. A lot of websites won’t talk to me any more. I can get onto YouTube via a workaround.

I’ve got an HP Omen that I’ve been sitting on for a few years, going to have to knuckle under and fire it up with Windows 10 in a few days.

If I don’t show up on FR after a that, you’ll know things didn’t go...well.

I’ve got one PC still running Windows XP just for posterity. Figure my Windows 7 PCs should last longer than me.

OR, you can get yourself a good firewall, 2 or 3 anti-virus/anti-malware programs and don’t take stupid steps like opening unknown email attachments. Plus be sure to run backups and have a clean version to reinstall if needed.

The idea that Microsoft has been protecting your computer all this time is ridiculous. You have to protect yourself.

Yes, I remember Microsoft suggesting you put a mask on your computer monitor, just for “safety”. Latex gloves too.

I thought they stopped doing this years ago for Windows 7.

Didn’t they say that a year ago? And two years ago? Now again...

When I had Vista I didn’t like it very much. Then I want to 10, which make me fall in love with Vista.

I tried 10 for about a month and went back to using only 7. Until the keyboard shortcuts in 10 match 7, I’m sticking with 7. (I HATE using a mouse; it’s too slow.)

“End-Of-Life for Windows 7 was actually three years ago, January 2020.”

That’s what I thought. Why do they say that every year?

End of life for BlackBerry OS was last January which really pisses me off. (I’m using it now to type this ‘cause it still connects to wi-fi.)

If Elon really wants to follow through on his comment about putting out a secure cell phone, all he has to do is bring back BlackBerry OS. No need to re-create the wheel.)

That’s so funny. And logical.

My girlfriend’s husband bought a car for her that she hated. When he dies, she learned there was a problem selling it — something to do improper with paperwork. So she wrapped empty boxes in beautiful gift wrap and left them in plain sight. Left the keys in the car.

This was in SoCal. Nobody took the bait.

I really liked DOS versions of WordPerfect and Paradox. Things made sense in DOS.

I liked the Sound Recorder on XP. Very basic but it worked great for recording clips of music simply.
