Ohio Gov. Signs Legislation Defining Natural Gas as ‘Green Energy’

The natural gas industry in Ohio has gained a victory of sorts after Gov. Mike DeWine signed legislation that allows for a broader expansion of drilling for oil and gas in state parks.

The bill, which has been very controversial, also defines natural gas as a source of “green energy.”

A state law from 2011 provided state agencies with authority to lease out state lands for oil and gas exploration and production projects if they choose to. The legislation, House Bill 507, modifies this language. Instead of saying state agencies “may” lease out state lands for oil and gas exploration, the bill signed by the governor says a state agency “shall” accept a lease, provided certain conditions are met.

“Beginning on the effective date of this amendment, and ending on the effective date of the rules adopted under section 155.34 of the Revised Code, a state agency shall lease, in good faith, a formation within a parcel of land that is owned or controlled by the state agency for the exploration for and development and production of oil or natural gas,” the bill reads.

The bill also says “green energy includes energy generated by using natural gas as a resource.” Unsurprisingly, the legislation was introduced by the Ohio Oil and Gas Association as a means to push the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission to expedite the approval process of oil and gas drilling on state lands.

House Bill 507 has been very controversial, especially among environmental advocates. "Green energy" refers to energy sources that do not involve the use of fossil fuels, such as solar and wind. Natural gas is a fossil fuel extracted from the earth and composed largely of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The production, transport and combustion of natural gas can contribute...

Can you tell me which County and are they using a “full-size” rig (90-foot sections of drill-string)?

I just came home after 30 years in the O&G industry and am interested anytime there is drilling in MI.

I’m hoping this type of thing will be done in many states. It might be the only way we can fight to keep our gas stoves and heaters.

It is.
But not in Lancaster Ohio where it fired its ovens with cheap natural gas from the Hocking hills for years.
Sorry I was not more specific.

This is good until the federal government bans gas stoves and furnaces. The bastards are working on that right now.

The new Congress needs to start raising a holy stink about the damned government’s latest overreach and the harm it will do. I’d bet not two in a hundred Americans have heard what the radical green Dems are planning.

Many NG wells are drilled and then capped.
The NG company knows the gas is there in reserve. It just does not need the supply currently in its system. There is only so much storage capacity in the system.

I knew people in Western NY State that had a gas well on their property. National Fuel gas drilled the well and then just capped it.
The key thing is to make the company agree to pipe the gas to your residence/barn/workshop on your property. Then you have free gas forever. If that well is out in the middle of your 150 acre dairy farm it could cost tens of thousands of dollars to bring it to your house.

Natural gas is very clean energy. And electricity is largely made by burning natural gas. It’s a ridiculous comment on Biden’s part. We’re use to that from the Resident, though.

Methane comes out of my ass.
That makes methane natural gas.
The thing we all pass.
Is there a special tax credit for us Green Energy producers?

Totally agree. “Green energy” as a viable source for any sizable population area is a joke, but as an alternate source for isolated areas or very limited use, it has some merit.
