Might have possibly been incompetence, but these planes are so old, and I doubt well maintained, metal fatigue of the latches and hinges could be a problem...............
There are several airlines that flew into the USSR but they had to fly to Moscow only. From there everyone had to fly Aeroflot. Government monopoly. My sister and brother in law went to central Russia in March a couple of years ago. Had some interesting stories about their flights.
Maybe an attempt by the FSB for another ‘accident’ of someone Little Pukin wants to get rid of.

Actually, it's a practice that dates back to the days of radial engined aircraft where you didn't want the dirty exhaust to show on your nice paint job.

The FA who was (as she called it) “waving like a flag” while hanging onto the staircase bannister came to speak to my inflight training class. And I flew with another guy who had been in the downstairs galley when it happened and a 250 pound beverage cart flew across and smashed into him, crushing his forearm. He had a steel bar in his arm where the bone used to be.
I had a 1971 Gremlin that had a rusted out driver’s door latch and it finally wouldn’t shut tight and latch. We held it closed with rope for a while, an I finally fashioned a new locking post from a bolt and nuts inserted into the frame. Actually worked. We never took the car to 30,000 feet, though.
Well, they were already in Siberia...................

It isn’t as if it’s lost luggage. I mean, they know where it went.

I read the NTSB report on that flight, nice to learn more insight. Our CRM classes are really good since we can play/act out scenarios of different events and how we might/could have changed the outcome.

When I was in the Navy, I took a Space A flight once from Pensacola to Dallas in an old C46 or similar, it has been decades. Anyway, the plane was on the way to graveyard, I sat on the drop down bench in the cockpit, they flew at about 3,000 feet, and the side cargo door kept popping open. The pilot and co-pilot took turns strapping a rope on and walking back to close the door. As a 20 or 21 year old, an interesting flight to say the least.
