Tractor maker John Deere has agreed to give its US customers the right to fix their own equipment.

Previously, farmers were only allowed to use authorised parts and service facilities rather than cheaper independent repair options.

Deere and Co. is one of the world's largest makers farming equipment.

“But no, it has nothing to do with equipment under warranty, or equipment that has been financed or equipment that has been leased or any of the other excuses that I have heard out of FReepers over the last few years who are desperate to cling to the idea that Big Business is full of angels and these evil socialist farmers just want to run roughshod over the poor little dears.”

Yea, and you just assumed that I think that Big Business is full of angels.

Go to preach to someone else.

Yup. I have in-laws who run a used car business buying late model Mercedes and BMWs at auction with service problems they recognize as electronic related. They pooled money to buy some expensive diagnostic machines to diagnose and repair the electronics and make a good profit re-selling the cars. They warn buyers that other electronics are also prone to break, so they also collect on the repair side as well.

Nothing new.

Henry Ford wanted to nearly give the Model T away, on the condition that all the repair parts could only come from Ford. The Government wouldn’t allow him to do that.

Razors and blades model. Sell the initial product, then have the customer continue buying stuff to keep it working.

You rushed to defend JD without knowing even the basics of the case. That pretty much pegs you.

Next time try to do a little research before you start pounding on the keyboard.

Go to Youtube “Farming, fixing, fabricating” channel. They do all their own fixes on a large fleet of John Deere equipment. The only thing they don’t do is ECU diagnostics. Privateers can do those kind of diagnostics too but you need the skills to go along with the equipment. Few people posses that.

P.S. The implications of this decision go beyond fixing tractors.

Check out what BMW and Audi are doing with cars. Optional features on some new models require a subscription to access. Like your heated seats? “pay up sucka” or they turn them off remotely. You just rent the features you paid for. This will spread.

I really don't know, and it's too cold out to go look. It's not anywhere near the house, or I would.

It's this one, though, but all rust and no remaining paint. It runs, but Beau is saving it for his Nephew who wants to eventually restore it.

I have driven it. We hauled 800 gallons of water to 400 newly-planted evergreen trees on July 4th, 2012. It was 104 degrees that day and I was wondering WHAT I had signed up for, LOL! We had a very bad drought that year. 200 trees survived, though.

If memory serves it wasn’t so much having to buy official parts, it was that they weren’t even allowed to service it at all.

May be confusing with another issue, but believe it had to do with the software locking folks out, IE if you wanted to replace a part you needed to do software stuff to reset things etc, and you weren’t allowed legally to do it, and if you did you would void your warrantee.

‘xactly. Had a beautiful BMW. It really and truly was an ultimate driving machine while I had it. Loved it, until this started going south. I was going to buy a JD garden tractor, but I already had the experience with my BMW.

I also checked with the John Deere service department. They told me they had no openings for service until AUGUST ! It was still June.

I am closing in on Medicare. I didn't want to create an online SS account, so I called the local SS office. It was 2 months to get an appointment. So I created an online account to apply. During the online account signup, I was kicked out of the process and had to bring a birth certificate to the local SS office. I walked into the SS office to give them my birth record and was out the door in about 15 minutes. LOL

Chode :" Success... "

(From the article): " The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) and Deere & Co. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sunday."
"It addresses a long-running issue for farmers and ranchers when it comes to accessing tools,
information and resources, while protecting John Deere's intellectual property rights
and ensuring equipment safety," AFBF President Zippy Duvall said.

"Under the agreement, equipment owners and independent technicians will not be allowed to "divulge trade secrets"
or "override safety features or emissions controls or to adjust Agricultural Equipment power levels."

(My Comment) : This is a mutual agreement to repair John Deere factory equipment through 'independent repairmen' rather than previously mandated Deere service centers.
It does not establish a legal precedent, but rather, is a private understanding covering the 'need to repair'.
Given the frequent breakdown of supply chain issues, this memorandum of agreement should increase the ease of repair during stressful agricultural seasons
where repair centers have gotten overloaded with work and replacement parts may be unavailable.
This is a common sense response by both suppliers and consumers and should aid in keeping agricultural costs lower.

A few years ago I shopped JD for a tractor. When the dealer opened the hood I found out all engines are Mahindra now. Wow.

It’s a good thing any time Mother Deere takes one in the shorts. That company is evil.

A couple months ago I yanked the airmatic suspension from my son’s 2015 Merciless (not a typo) GL450, and installed the Strutmasters coils, shocks (rear) and coil-over struts (front). They provide a ‘patch’ that gets rid of the suspension warning on the dash screen.

It does however throw a ‘service required, do not shift into gear, take to dealer’ warning, which disappears in a few seconds.

Rides and drives just fine.

HILLBILLY STRIPTEASE

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old John Deere tractor.

Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.

Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, "What the world're ya doing, Billy Bob?"

"Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebers out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob ..

"But me 'n the wife been havin trouble lately in the bedroom d'partment, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor."
