Rolling Stone magazine ^ | Rolling Stone

Posted on 01/07/2023 4:42:12 AM PST by DallasBiff

Aretha Franklin described her mission as a singer like this: “Me with my hand outstretched, hoping someone will take it.” That kind of deep, empathetic bond between artist and listener is the most elemental connection in music. And you can think of our list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time as a celebration of that bond. These are the vocalists that have shaped history and defined our lives — from smooth operators to raw shouters, from gospel to punk, from Sinatra to Selena to SZA

It took 76 posts to mention Jim Morrison, the Lizard King.

Ronald Padavona, also known by his career name, Ronnie James Dio. Robert Plant, Ian Anderson…just got out of the forest from metal detecting and walking in zero degree weather at the moment…I’ll follow up later…

Pavroti?

The article addresses that:

You might notice that, say, there isn’t any opera on our list — that’s because our purview is pop music writ large, meaning that almost all the artists on this list had significant careers as crossover stars making popular music for the masses."

Definitely Mr. Dickenson. One of my all time favorites since the beginning and until now, of course.

Howabout King Diamond!!!

this.... one only need to watch a live version of Nessun Dorma by Pavoratti to see (in my opinion) he is the greatest voice of all time. Many great rock voice... all pale in comparison to Pavoratti...

Pavoratti once did a series called Pavoratti & Friends, for which he got a lot of flack, where he did songs with performers like James Brown, Tracy Chapman, etc. He wasn’t at his best here, and clearly was careful to not dramatically outshine the stars, at which he failed. You can see the dramatic disparity in the power, range, etc. between Pavoratti and the others. Go watch them on Youtube.

Yeah. A very subjective list, as expected. Top 11were POC, so, there’s that. I’d rather listen to Margo Timmons or Allison Krauss than many I saw high on the list.

They should change the name of the list to “200 Favorite”

What about Lee Marvin?? Born, as he was, under a wanderin’ star!

May as well have Clint Eastwood too!

Yeah, I saw this list on Twitter and had to check for myself. It's real.

I'd bet the next time RS does their top 100 guitarists lists we'll see the same thing (though Jimi Hendrix has always fallen out at #1).

We'll see Hendrix at #1, Prince #2, Bruno Mars #3... Eddie Van Halen #78...

You get the picture.

Agree!
What about opera and musical theatre if they are going to compile a list!

It’s the singers not the songs. Dennis DeYoung is one of rocks premier vocalist of the last 50 years.
