So is this now the standard? Any time a player leaves the field by ambulance, and is unresponsive when reaching the hospital, the game is a nullity?

How long before someone is accused of faking such an injury?

Impossible? Maybe. But I recall a story from rural Texas many years ago. A traditional powerhouse football team had a very bad year. They hosted their traditional arch rival, who fielded a great team that year, and late in the fourth quarter were trailing the arch rivals by 50 odd (or some other huge number) points. Incensed at the thought of such a loss, someone affiliated with the school shut off the power to the field lights.

It was announced that the lights could not be restored that night, so the game was finished. The home team is responsible for providing a suitable playing field, and forfeits if it fails to do so. So, instead of a 56-3 (or whatever) loss, the game went into the record books as a 2-0 forfeit.

Well, Cleveland is about halfway between Cinci and Buffalo.

It *could* be considered as a neutral field.

And would be a super fun drive during the next lake effect snow band, for both teams ...

~~~
Cleveland is closer to Buffalo than Cincinnati. Yes it’s still in Ohio but I still ask, why is Cincinnati being punished?
I would suggest the Ohio State Horshoe instead. It’s a lot closer to cincy than buffalo, but technically not the same field that the tragedy happened
Again (as I mentioned on other threads):
The players and coaches, who literally watched a player DIE on the field, decided they didn’t want to finish or resume this game. Without them, there is no game.
For those who are not NFL fans, this wasn’t just any game. It was pretty much the biggest game of the NFL regular season which huge playoff ramifications, as the NFL article states.
In fairness, I will say this listening to both press conferences from the Doctors and the Bills coach & QB: of all the stupid questions the media asked, none dared ask was the play recently vaxxed or boosted (yes, I am aware of rumors and twitter posts that we taken down). One media puke came close when interviewing the doctors, but probably fearing for his job, he made it a vague question.
Someone made reference to that rare phenomenon, “commotio cordis”, but the docs literally dismissed that out of hand.
In short Travis, no one is saying it, but everyone thinks it.
My $0.02 from Bills Country
I think that’s the plan if the Ravens beat the Bengals Sunday.
Damar Hamlin is off of the ventilator and visiting and talking with Family this morning.
Also, if not in the playoffs this year, Buffalo will return to Cincy next season for a regular season game. Next year’s scheduled matchups are now out except for the dates.
Umm this isn’t just “leaves by ambulance” (which is pretty rare in the first place). Got CPR. On the field. Where all the players on his team, and probably plenty from the other team as well, could HEAR them breaking his ribs to try to save his life. I don’t think anybody is faking that.
AFC Championship game on neutral ground? What does this fix?
Fixes the "problem" of having a big crowd for the game.
And regardless of what happens, someone will complain that they got screwed because of all of this.
But I don't watch the NFL anymore, so ...
The game will sell out wherever it’s played, especially if in Indy. Guaranteed!
Some will complain because that’s what selfish people do. The man was dead on the field and by the Grace of God was revived. Everyone needs to chalk this up to the “Sometimes life just ain’t fair” rule that we all know and love and get on with it. My 2 cents.
I think the Ravens will win for sure. The Bengals have been “gifted” an automatic AFC North title now without actually earning it. They can rest players.
Of course, it may be that the Ravens can rest players too, now that the game between them has been rendered meaningless.
If the Bills had beaten the Bengals, this game against the Ravens would have been for the AFC North title. Ravens season ticket holders should sue the league. They just made a potentially big game ticket, worthless.
They flip a coin if the Bengals lose. So I don’t expect they’ll rest Chase, Higgins, and Burrow. They sew up home field with a win.
I’ve heard that if this game had been between two teams who were just playing out the string of the season, this issue would not have nearly the attention that it has been getting.
I think it’s clear that any solution that does not involve replaying that game is going to be criticized by people.
I think all sports fans would like to see things settled on the field , and not decided by the commissioner and his people sitting in an office
I see your point. Plus, in theory, a win for the Bengals still puts them in the mix for a bye week.
They probably want it to be at an NFL field, but I think the Shoe would be a good choice otherwise.
There is no completely just way to fix this. The simplest way and the one that creates the least distortions is to simply base it on the standings after this Sunday’s games. In essence, the cancelled game is a tie.
