Social media users have been left bewildered after discovering that 550 divided by two is 275 - and not 225 as many seem to instinctively assume.

The numerical mayhem has gone viral as Rishi Sunak's 'big idea' of making maths compulsory to the age of 18 was mocked as a 'dead cat' to distract from the NHS crisis and winter of discontent.

I think the real news is that (1) a politician actually cares about educating kids on real stuff, not propaganda and (2) the public mocks him for it.

It doesn’t matter what I “think” 575 / 2 is. The “fact” is that it is 275.

These poor kids obviously didn’t have the advantage of learning ciphering from Jethro Bodine (”Carry the nought”) or Pa Kettle:

American kids are now being openly solicited to become Trans freaks and parents are mostly allowing it. Learning math is not important.

--- "...as many seem to instinctively assume...."

Your comparison with the film Idiocracy is apt. People are innumerate. Regarding the various "official" stats, bogus or not, applying simple arithmetic to them shows how innumerate, as for example with the mortality rate of the bogus pandemic. The same may be shown for the massive increase in debt, at various levels, predicting with simple clarity that collapse -- like previous collapses -- will ensue.

The IDIOCY of the Daily Mail's Elmira Tanatarova is shown in the quote from her article. There is no instinct in arithmetic, and assumptions -- forecasts, models and all the rest as we have seen in all the worldwide cons -- are conducted to flummox the innumerate among us. With a purpose.

Look behind each "Oz-like"curtain at some magician -- such as Imperial College, or the WEF, or CDC and so on -- to find liars peddling their wares. Because at the root of so much is the grasping for power and control and for wealth.

I was at a fast food joint a couple years ago and had just handed the cashier my money and the power went out. The cash drawer had already opened.

He didn’t miss a beat and counted out my change perfectly. Other cashiers were at a standstill — no digital display of the change due. They watched my cashier almost in awe.

I asked him, “Home schooled?”
Him: Yes ma’am.

There is no such thing as half of 550 because 2 does not divide into 5 evenly.

You're kidding right??? What's half of 50? Now what's half of 500? Now add the results together.

> I’m assuming fractions and percentages are no longer taught in about 4th or 5th grade? <

They are being taught. But now many school districts are mandating the use of calculators in math classes. Please see my post #54.

So a student could tell you 4/5 = 80% with the help of a calculator. But without one, nope.

The poll suggests a reality that very many people have a low ability in math.

My husband was tutoring a HS freshman in math. She had never learned, or heard of, “the times tables”.

He taught her that, and many methods of “working out” an answer.

Her teacher got mad at THE GIRL when she turned around her math skills! For being smarter than her teacher, I guess.

Aaaahhh......... the popsicle stick matrix. Mrs King would be proud of you

When I was in fourth grade, we did the popsicle matrix a lot. Each of us was required to have a pencil, some paper and a popsicle stick

It turns out that a popsicle stick used as a guide produces horizontal and vertical lines that lay out a square matrix. The first and left rows are filled in with the digits 1-9. The other blanks are filled in with the multiplied number.

It has been a while but as I recall, the popsicle stick produced a 10 x 10 matrix square and thus allowed multiples up to only 9 rather than the 10 in your graphic.

This is what happens when children are allowed to use pocket calculators in arithmetic class.

This also what happens when children are not required to learn the times tables, decimal system, fractions, basic algebra and geometry, etc.
