Adults who stay well-hydrated appear to be healthier, develop fewer chronic conditions, such as heart and lung disease, and live longer than those who may not get sufficient fluids.
"The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down aging and prolong a disease-free life," said Natalia Dmitrieva, Ph.D.,
They found that adults with higher levels of normal serum sodium—with normal ranges falling between 135-146 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L)—were more likely to show signs of faster biological aging. This was based on indictors like metabolic and cardiovascular health, lung function, and inflammation. For example, adults with serum sodium levels above 142 mEq/L had a 10-15% associated increased odds of being biologically older than their chronological age compared to ranges between 137-142 mEq/L, while levels above 144 mEq/L correlated with a 50% increase. Likewise, levels of 144.5-146 mEq/L were associated with a 21% increased risk of premature death compared to ranges between 137-142 mEq/L. Similarly, adults with serum sodium levels above 142 mEq/L had up to a 64% increased associated risk for developing chronic diseases like heart failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation and peripheral artery disease, as well as chronic lung disease, diabetes, and dementia. Conversely, adults with serum sodium levels between 138-140 mEq/L had the lowest risk of developing chronic disease. The findings don't prove a causal effect.
"People whose serum sodium is 142 mEq/L or higher would benefit from evaluation of their fluid intake," Dmitrieva said. She noted that most people can safely increase their fluid intake to meet recommended levels, which can be done with water as well as other fluids, like juices, or vegetables and fruits with a high water content. The National Academies of Medicine, for example, suggest that most women consume around 6-9 cups (1.5-2.2 liters) of fluids daily and for men, 8-12 cups (2-3 liters).

I am a very strong believer of this, and have been for many years.
The body is already ~75% water, so keeping it refreshed with good clean water is essential.
If you want to really look into it, look into “intra-cellular hydration” which os one of the greatest secrets of maintaining good full body health.
There is a reason why the aliens address us as “ugly bags of mostly water”. :)
Gen. Ripper: He said war was to important to be left to the Generals. When he said that, fifty years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
One said no salt.
Other said drink tons of water.
He washed out all his electrolytes and was prone to passing out.
When we figured it out, Mom fed him salted chips and crackers to keep his salt levels normal.
I remind myself of this good advice frequently.
Rainwater!!!
No thanks, I don’t drink.
Since it is nearly all water, does coffee count? Beer?
I try to drink 60 oz of water every day. I weigh ~135 lb. My last lab showed my sodium was slightly low at 132. For a change, my potassium was WNL, at 4.3 vs the usual 3.4. I feel okay but electrolytes can be tricky so who knows what’s really going on inside me.
You can actually die from drinking too much water
While you’re at it, remember to hyperventilate.
Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) can be dangerous to human life. Despite this truth, most people are not unduly concerned about the dangers of it.
Get your facts straight on this DHMO so you do not succumb to its dangers. A Dihydrogen Monoxide overdose can be fatal.
This is too, but low sodium levels are bad for you too, there is a healthy range
Another casual (not causal) relationship for click bait. Sodium levels have nothing to do with longevity or heart disease. The low sodium cartel has been trying to prove it for 50 years to no avail.
Persons with high sodium levels have so many lifestyle issues one cannot count them. It is those lifestyle issues that cause a minuscule reduction in life expectancy. High sodium levels are a symptom not a cause.
I liked the one about persons who drink three but less than seven glasses of red wine living many years longer.
I propose that eating a burrito whilst driving a Chevrolet more than 20 years old may shorten ones live expectancy by 5 years.
But, of course, there is always naming your child Klaus or DeAndre. Klaus will live to 91, DeAndre will take the room temperature challenge at 30 or before.
Hope to lose the 30 covid pounds I gained after getting Epstein Barr Virus (adult mononucleosis) since last OCT 21 when I got the 3rd booster stupidly......
I'll pick up the pace and break out the big berkey filters for pristine water. I'm a coffee and sparkling ice drinker.
Have had two elderly relatives who started showing signs of confusion. One, a doctor thought it was the start of dementia but it turned out with both of them that their confusion was caused by urinary tract infection due to not staying hydrated. Once the UTIs were addressed, they both started acting normal. I share this in case you have elderly relatives.
So proud of my 85 year old Mama. She is so GOOD about drinking water all day; has her bottle with her at all times.
When she was here for Christmas (she still drives and is a good driver!) I filled it up for her 2x.
Her 62 year old daughter needs a kick in the pants. I’m taking this as A Sign From Above. Thanks! :)
