Has anyone learned a foreign language as an adult using an online website? I’m looking to learn a foreign language via online “schooling” and was hoping to get some FReepers feedback. Thank you in advance.

What a near nightmare!

Good thing you knew some French to get that map and back on your way. More people in EU (and Quebec) know some basic English than they let on. Wonder if that happened to you as I assume the person at the mini-mart surely knew you spoke something not FR.

When in Quebec, referendum for separation was in hot motion. To certain FR people, anyone who spoke EN was presumed one of those CAN-EN bad guys still wed to the British ... and not conversing in EN under any circumstances was their weapon. For most of the CAN-FR I met or dealt with (tickets, food etc) were civil, pleasant - sometimes we would speak Franglais to each other.

It's like that in Catalonia in Spain, especially in Barcelona. If they know you live in Spain, and you speak in Spanish, they will pretend they don't understand it, but if they know you are a tourist speaking Spanish, they will speak Spanish to you.

I’m at a 1050 day streak, in the German course. At first there seems to be no direction or reasoning, and explanations are rare. However, as you learn it starts to make sense.

Honestly, a combination of Babbel and watching foreign films in the language I’m learning with subtitles is really effective.

“How much is Super?”

$13/month.
I have it for Spanish and Portuguese. You can study as many languages as you like for the same price.

It took me awhile to start looking at the different tips in front of each section. I do have some other Spanish text books, on kindle or even vintage.

Duolingo, plus listening to Spanish commercials and people talking, has helped. One thing I really work on is not trying to translate things into English but to understand it directly in Spanish.

Good question. Many good responses here. My view. I learned a few languages and here are the two keys:
1. Memorize verb conjugations
2. Watch lips of person speaking.

Fortunately, only Lackland. Had I gone to Monterrey I am sure I would have washed out because there would have been so much to do out there. Every other language was in California except for “special Arabic” - Hebrew, which was at Ft. Meade.

I had a Russian classmate whose son recently went to the Chinese course out in Monterrey. Unfortunately, he washed out. Just wasn’t his cup of tea. He did get a sweet gig doing something technical so it wasn’t all a loss.

I used Duo Lingo to review my French and Spanish — not actually learn it, however.

I quit once the practice conversations got woke. (Example: la femme de Marie — Marie’s wife.)

I used the full immersion method. I couldn’t speak a word of English when I started kindergarten, but I picked it up really fast.

Agree. Latin was a great base for English — and so much more. My two most valuable classes were Latin and the Personal Typing elective.
