Pelé, the Brazilian soccer icon who brought the World Cup trophy to his home country three times, becoming an international superstar and the highest-paid team athlete in the world at the time, has died. He was 82.
Pelé's health had been deteriorating as he aged. Doctors at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo said in late December that he was receiving "elevated care" related to "kidney and cardiac dysfunctions" stemming from the cancer he had been fighting for more than a year. He also had a respiratory infection, and his family said he would be staying in the hospital over the Christmas holiday.
He and Argentine star Diego Maradona, who was younger than Pelé and played after his retirement, have often been discussed as the greatest players of all time — even being jointly named the "player of the century" by FIFA in 2000. Despite the competition, the two struck up a friendship before Maradona died in 2020 after years of trading jabs.

G.O.A.T.
RIP Pelé.
The real GOAT, as opposed to Lebron.
R.I.P. G.O.A.T.
Same for me. Pele made me pay attention to and then love the “beautiful” game.
Rest In Peace, Pele, the Greatest soccer player in my lifetime.
Oh no!!! Putin again???
RIP Pele.
He seemed like a genuinely nice man and he was certainly a once in a generation talent.
Had the pleasure of seeing him play against the Rowdies here in Tampa when he was with the New York Cosmos 48 years ago. RIP Pele.
God bless him.
See you in Heaven someday Pele. We’ll kick the ball around a bit...
Several years ago in brazil, a thug was about to rob a taxi driver and the passenger. When he saw the passenger was Pele’ he stopped and apologized. Pele’ then talked to the would be robber told him he didn’t need to live a life of crime and gave him some money. The would be robber wept.
Year signs:
So, the simplest acronym for this year—תשפג—is “May it be a Year of Great Wonder” (תְּהֵא שְׁנַת פֶּלֶא גָּדוֹל). The “Great Wonder” that we are anticipating this year is the coming of Mashiach...
While the name Pelé is spelled with a hei at the end [פלה], versus the pele [פֶּלֶא] that spells "wonder", the blessing matches right up in pronunciation and the description of being great.
On that note, what happens if the year blessing is written with the Great Pelé, the one spelled with a hei...
תהא שנת פלה גדול (1314)
If that number doesn't ring a bell, here's the 1314 name that the whole world knows:
ארצות הברית
Yet everyone seems so grim in that place,
בתוך הבקעה והיא מלאה עצמות
= 1314
in the midst of the valley that was full of bones

When I was visiting colleges as a high school senior, one of them bragged that their soccer coach was “Pelé’s brother”. The poor man didn’t even have a name!
Rodney Marsh sucks! Fort Lauderdale Strikers!!!!!
Remember that when Pele was all lit up, the announcement came that Pelé had been sent to a place for end days comfort care.
The warnings had gone out about her hair.
When it rains it pours.
Victory w/pele, Stallone, Michael Caine is a great movie... recommend it
My brother in law was in the World Cup for Yugslavia, specifically Croation. He played against Pele as a defenseman and held him scoreless, though they lost the game.
I really am not a fan of soccer, but he could run about 10.5 in the 100 yard dash at 38 or so, and would steal the basketball from us playing with his foot, and make a basket. He was a helluva athlete. He passed just before christmas. It was his touch with greatness, besides being first cousin with George Cuvalo..changed to Chuvalo for Canadian purposes.
He said that Pele’ was just as great as his legend.
Pele did more than just score.
Probably my most enduring image of him is passing to Carlos Alberto for that goal in the 70 World Cup Final against Italy.
He was an ambassador to Soccer and through his golden personality made it palatable even for the USA.
MUI he invented the “bicycle kick.”
