As a response to a federal order by the Department of Defense, West Point is starting to remove all Confederate statues and portraits from its campus.
West Point Superintendent Lieutenant General Steve Gilland broke the news and stated “During the holiday break, we will begin a multi-phased process, in accordance with Department of Defense directives, to remove, rename or modify assets and real property at the United States Military Academy and West Point installation that commemorate or memorialize the Confederacy or those who voluntarily served with the Confederacy”.
One of the most notable Confederate portraits that will be removed is General Robert E. Lee’s portrait.
Besides Lee’s portrait, a stone image of him along with several plaques of his likeness will also be removed.
Most people only know Robert E. Lee as the General of the Confederate Army but before choosing to side with the Confederacy he served 32 years in the US military.
Lee started off his military career by being the top graduate at West Point and made a name for himself during the Mexican-American War where at one point he even worked side by side with General Ulysses S. Grant.
After the Mexican American War, Lee was later named as the Superintendent of West Point.
In the years leading up to the Civil War, Lee condemned any states succeeding from the Union and stated they were betraying the Founding Fathers.
Advisor to President Lincoln Union Army General Winfield Scott even requested Robert E. Lee to be the new general of the Union Army.
Lee, however, would deny the opportunity and would eventually resign from the US military in order to join forces with the Confederate Army shortly after Virginia succeeded from the Union.
His reason was he didn’t want to betray his native state of Virginia.
They have to destroy and eliminate everything that made America great!
At West Point, much of the history we teach was made by the people we taught.
So much for teaching history.
This is not true. Confederate Veterans are considered “equal to” Veterans of the United States armed forces when it comes to certain VA benefits. They were never declared Veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
This is correct. The Custus will gave Lee 5 years to free the slaves owned by Custis at his death. The last of the Custus slaves was freed just shortly after the Battle of Fredricksburg.
The United States never declared war on the Confederate States of America. The Confederate States of America did, in fact, issue a Declaration of War against the United States.
When we get some sanity back in government can like a President Trump undo all this crap????
Looking at your short posting history, I think you should head back over to Democrat Underground...
YES!!!!! Thank you!!!
Sure, but then the next whacko POTUS would do it all over again................
Lee was a Colonel in the U.S. Army when he resigned his commission before the war. He would not be promoted to the rank of General until after he had left the United States Army for Confederate service.
I should have said recognized as United States Veterans.
Recognized as equal to United States Veterans, not United States Veterans.
The United States wouldn’t recognize the Confederate States.
No need to declare war on “rebels” and “traitors”.
This is true.
If you want to nit-pick.
Still sucks in my opinion.
But I guess that’s my opinion.
You’re in *favor* of the Commie Feds wiping out parts of our history they don’t like?
Canada is in the same situation we were in for a century after the Civil War. They couldn’t condemn Riel without provoking a large part of the country (Quebec). Commemorating Riel is also a way of saying that the country is no longer run by the old Establishment. Australia gets to celebrate uprisings as an alternative to actually breaking with the UK. Our current situation isn’t the same as Canada’s or Australia’s.
So the US fought another illegal war?
No war. Just put down a rebellion.
Sure, but then the next whacko POTUS would do it all over again.
I fear you’re right but I gotta have faith that the American people are seeing this attempted take over of our country....morally and politically and must never elect a Demonrat President again! And that includes RINO’s too.
Really? Didn’t know that Virginia succeeded from the Union— but they surely have done better than most of the remaining Union ever since.
The word these self righteous MORONS rewriting to FORGET actual history.. is SECESSION as in SECEDING perfectly legally from the UNION of States of the United States of America. The war did not decide the legality of secession— it still has not, except by force of ARMS which was illegal for the other States to do to the seceding States. Texas regularly points out that it is still a Republic within the Republic of the United States.
But these Orwellian a@@ES would never get this and so think they can remove the history of their own institution’s leaders including R.E. Lee who was COMMANDANT of West Point and developed many future Union and Confederate Leaders. The point is that all of these Confederates signed a Loyalty Oath and were admitted back into the US as citizens— including LEE— whom they conveniently lost his signed Parole only to find it in the Library of Congress hidden in a boot- intentionally.
Final point the US Army has MANY MANY MANY direct descendant heroic leaders who served in WWI and WWII — descendents of Confederate fathers and mothers. Are they going to dig up these Generals, Lt. Generals, Captains etc? From Arlington— is that NEXT? Because By God they will be ripped to pieces by people who respect the bound up wounds that resulted in American heroes from all sides! Disgusting— and this is the big incompetano who was NEVER going to be anything worthwhile at all-—Lloyd Austin- a truly stupid man only surpassed by Gen. Milley the furtive looking loser who thinks hes some kind of fighting man. He’s not- a paper pushing pussy.
