I think “Give Peace a Chance” is so bad because Lennon wanted to write a protest song that anyone with an acoustic guitar could play and sing. So he only used 2 chords, and made it very simple on purpose so all the long hairs who had a couple guitar lessons could strum along.

For what it's worth, my wife seconds your vote for John Lennon/Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas".

She finds the tune to be dissonant with the words.

She suggests, for instance, that the tune to

Would go as well or better with

Was driving to see family one Christmas and stopped for the night in Plainview, Texas between Amarillo and Lubbock. I ate at some country place and, between all the cheery Christmasy songs, I heard Elton John singing “Cold as Christmas” which is about a man trying to revive a romance with his wife that had gone out. He tells his children on the phone “She’s as cold as Christmas in the middle of the year”. I guess the person selecting the music didn’t bother to screen the selections before making the playlist.
