If it is driving vs flying vs amtrack, out to 1200 miles and you already own a good car or SUV.... drive it. I am in rural Central Texas. If I am going anywhere that I can drive to in 12 hours or less, then I drive. If it will take two days to drive, and I don't want to spend two days driving each way, then I will fly. I used to fly all the time, but after 9/11 the extra time it takes stopped being worth it. I have not had to fly anywhere since the COVID shutdowns.
Amtrack is not really an option here in Texas. There is Amtrack service (and I am using the word "service" loosely) between the major cities, but it takes far longer than driving.
