The head of a historically black college has defended police being called to arrest a student who was arguing with her professor.
Addressing the viral video of Leilla Hamoud, 20, being detained at Winston-Salem State University following a fallout with lecturer Cynthia Villagome over her essay, Chancellor Elwood Robinson said the school was in the right.
'We understand that the weaponization of police is a prevalent problem in our community, however, that is not what happened in this incident,' Robinson wrote in a letter to students and staff, adding that initial 'de-escalation efforts' had failed.
'We strive for a safe, inclusive, thriving, and intellectual community where all our faculty, staff, and students feel respected and supported. To that end, we will take swift and appropriate measures against any situation that contradicts those ideals.'
A spokesman for the school told CNN Villagome has been left shaken and emotional by the incident, noting 'there have been several threats to her safety.'
n the arrest video, Hamoud was seen sobbing and complaining the cops were hurting her as they forced her arms behind her back over what she says was a dispute about her final paper.
Hamoud claimed Villagomez got angry with her in class, saying she could either apologize for not redoing the essay as instructed or leave.
Hamoud said she rejected the ultimatum and held her presentation in class because she had worked on the assignment for two weeks before allegedly being given only six-hours to redo it.

What a half-hearted defense.
The Mexican professorette knew she’d been had when she realized she was only halfway up on the intersectionality totem pole from the student.
She’s so gone.
“We understand that the weaponization of police is a prevalent problem in our community ... “
Not surprised that the black official would feed into the ‘police brutality’ ethos to his listeners ...
Not surprised that the probably very woke he/she/it/ze instructor is another overweight leftist female (I think) ...
Very surprised that the student is black female ...
I would not bet against you.
This should have never been a police matter.
If the girl wouldn’t redo her essay, then flunk her and move on.
Just confusing as to why the cops were called in the 1st place.
From what I gathered in another article, the girl became belligerent and a professor from another classroom heard the ruckus she was making and called the police. The professor being confronted by the student did not call the police.
Poor handling of the situation by the prof from the start, but the student’s behavior of course was inexcusable.
The stated “awareness” of the college seems okay as long as a parallel message of the lines that cannot be crossed without an escalation is also delivered.
Students should know what behavior is considered unacceptable, because too many from the college’s demographic came from schools where that was never made clear or enforced, and also that if either a professor tells them to leave or they find something from the professor unacceptable from their perspective, they should themselves leave — and if they have a grievance they can and should take that up outside of the class.
No, but I think I also read an account of the prof leaving the class to talk to another or other profs before reentering before the cops arrived.
My thoughts exactly.
unless she is gay then it is a push
If they really dig into this hard enough, they’re going to find somebody white to blame it on
And there you have it. Why not support the calling of cops for the same reason for your inner city communities? Do they not deserve the same consideration? Do they not deserve to thrive? Do the residents feel respected and supported by gang members? Why aren't swift and appropriate measures supported when said gang members contradict those ideals? Effing hypocrites.
Aahhh, just enjoy the fruits of multi-culturalism - like on airlines.
The teacher rules in class.
If the teacher says “Leave.”, and you don’t...you’re trespassing and deserve arrest.
The one cop was white.
Maybe the black cop felt he had to get aggressive for the white cop?
Somehow a white with a penis is responsible…
Intersectionality gets sooooo confusing. I used to think it was when an SEC team played a PAC-12 team.

I agree. Why wait for the girl to get unhinged and have to call the police? If she refuses to do it then just fail her. That professor decided to stand her ground in a verbal altercation when she forgot she held the grade book.
Now as others have said here it’s going to be bad for the professor, even though the student acted a damn fool.
The white campus cop is gone for sure. Also, I want to read her essay. I’m guessing it’s either totally plagiarized or so poorly written that it looks like a 3rd grader wrote it. Release the essay and let us judge for ourselves.
