Study shows vitamin D deficiency could increase older people's risk of losing muscle strength by as much as 78%

Vitamin D plays an important role in the regulation of calcium and phosphorus absorption by an organism. It also helps keep the brain and immune system working. Researchers have now shown that vitamin D supplementation reduces the risk of dynapenia in older people by 78%.

Dynapenia is an age-associated loss of muscle strength.

"Vitamin D is known to participate in various functions of the organism. It’s a hormone and roles include helping to repair muscles and releasing calcium for muscle contraction kinetics," said Tiago da Silva Alexandre.

Bone and muscle tissue are interconnected not just mechanically and physically, but also biochemically. "Endocrine disorders such as vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency can lead to loss of bone mineral density as well as a reduction in muscle mass, strength and function," he said.

The main conclusion was that individuals with vitamin D deficiency, defined as less than 30 nanomoles per liter in the blood, had a 70% higher risk of developing dynapenia by the end of the four-year study period than those with normal levels of vitamin D, defined as more than 50 nmol/L.

"This is an important finding as it shows that vitamin D deficiency heightens the risk of muscle weakness by 70%. However, because we knew there are many worldwide cases of people with osteoporosis who take vitamin supplements, we needed to measure the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation," said Maicon Luís Bicigo Delinocente.

When individuals with osteoporosis and those taking vitamin D were excluded from the analysis, he explained, "we found that the risk of developing muscle weakness by the end of the four-year period was 78% higher for subjects with vitamin D deficiency at the start of the study than for subjects with normal vitamin D levels, and 77% higher for those with vitamin D insufficiency [30-50 nmol/L]."

“Sufficient” in the US is 20 ng/mL, which is equal to 50 nmol/L.

However, this study says “Normal” is something above those numbers, which then conveys the various benefits with muscles.

Vitamin D tests can be bought for as little as $49 from places like DirectLabs.com, if your doctor won’t prescribe it.

Me, too. It had my head swimming. I initially read it to say Vit D is BAD.

deficiency...increase risk...losing muscle strength

The writer could have written it much more simply: “Vit D prevents muscle loss”

Wisconsin Cows say, “Drink Our Milk!” :)

People mix skim milk with retinol, and grocery stores sell that milk.

Excess retinol reduces vitamin d and other vitamins.

That would be useful in cases of extreme deficiency.

Having a good vitamin d level has benefits after having a good level for many years.

I was taking two 5000 IU tablets of D3 daily but my doctor said I should cut my intake by half—so now I only take 5000 IU once a day.

Is this enough?

AND even if they can only get outside on a cloudy day for 10-20 min the benefits are highly noticeable - WE ALL NEED THIS RX imo.

I’ve read where newer tests showed 5,000 upto 10,000 iu/day is OK. See my post#12 too. Was pondering if you do take too much Vit D will it have some same symptoms as sunburn?

It’s more than enough. Your body deactivates most of what you take.

For a long time, people in the coldest countries took 10 micrograms per day. If you took vitamin d for many years you have stored for a long time and I think there is no reason to take more than 10 micrograms per day. The optimal blood level is 32 ng/ml.

Excess vitamin d reduces vitamin k and gamma tocopherol.

If vitamin k is low, the body doesn’t repair teeth.

There are more people with heart disease among people with low gamma tocooherol.

Excess vitamin d causes excess calcium, low potassium, and muscle loss. If you have excess calcium you become thirsty after drinking milk and there might be calcium and white spots on your tongue.

My mother in assisted living was prescribed exactly that. I used to think it was dumb how much more expensive the Rx form was although visually identical to the common OTC.
