An official at Mississippi State Penitentiary told how Thomas Edwin Loden Jr “was really up and in good spirits and he has a full belly” after being given a last meal before his execution
Loden, who had pleaded guilty to the rape and killing of 16-year-old girl Leesa Marie Gray, became the second inmate executed in the state in 10 years on Wednesday.
He has been on death row since 2001, when he pleaded guilty to capital murder, rape and four counts of sexual battery against Ms Gray.
Loden was given a last meal that included two bone-in fried pork chops, fried okra, a baked sweet potato with butter, Pillsbury Grands biscuits with butter and molasses, peach cobbler with French vanilla ice cream and Lipton sweet tea.
He was really up and in good spirits and he has a full belly, he ate a lot and seemed pretty cool as far as this and so, he was complaining because he had too much syrup, but he was complaining good, he was too full, he couldn’t eat it but he wanted to eat the ... syrup but anyway he had his biscuits
"The okra was good, he liked that, he liked the pork chops … he liked the vanilla ice cream God knows he ate every bit of it up, he enjoyed it, he’s in good spirits as far as I can tell.”
“He was concerned about what he had done and he was ready to do what he had to do, he was accepting and he is in good spirits considering what’s about to happen," another official added.

Girl he assaulted and murdered was beautiful girl with red-blond hair and a lovely smile.

The guy just snapped, raped and murdered this girl, then immediately tried to kill himself. He carved "I'm sorry" into his chest and slit his wrists. He was found passed out on the side of the road.
By all accounts, he spent every day in prison crushed with sorrow and remorse up until his final moments.
The girl's mother forgave him but still believed that justice in the form of execution needed to be served and he agreed.
What causes people to just snap like that?
I remember the retarded guy that Clinton executed who asked if he could save his ice cream for later.

Substance abuse. Maybe some kind of psychotic break. Or was he a potential serial killer with homocidal compulsions, who managed to get caught after what one assumes was his first kill?
In one of the legal documents on this case you can find with a Google search for this perp’s name, he claimed, among other things, that he was sexually abused by a member of the church when he was a child.
In the same document, he also claims that he snapped because the victim told him that “becoming a Marine is the last thing she’d want to do with her life” or something to that effect.
Is any of it true? Who knows.
Interesting and thanks. I did not know that. If he committed the same crime in California, he would live for decades more. They eliminated death row there, or maybe it was another state. That now puts death row type criminals in with the general population.

This is a big problem. It has been noted that for capital crimes, the death penalty is a distinct deterrent. But it must be administered with all due speed.
yes, there is the old saying that the prospect of being hanged does wonders to concentrate the mind.
I found it.
It looks like he tried to get away with it, digging a grave on his grandmother's property and then attempted suicide after the cops started closing in. He was suspected because he had been seen in her restaurant and was hitting on her.
The guy had a clean criminal record and a wife and daughter at home.
Cases where otherwise "normal" people just snap and commit horrific crimes are the most disturbing because it means anyone could do something like this.
The accounts of the crime in the document above are quite graphic. This guy really went to work on this poor girl.
