Fury as Oregon Governor Kate Brown commutes sentences for all 17 people on state's death row to life in prison in her final month in office

Oregon Governor Kate Brown has commuted the sentences of the 17 people on the state's death row to life in prison in her final month in office - leading to fury from the victims' families.

Brown, a Democrat with less than a month remaining in office, said she was using her executive clemency powers to commute the sentences and that her order will take effect on Wednesday.

The decision to change the death sentences to life in prison without the possibility of parole has been met with fury from the families of the murderers' victims and government officials.

Oregon has not executed a prisoner since 1997 and in 2020 the administration announced it was phasing out its death row and reassigning the prisoners.

The Brown administration is known for its clemency and opposition to the death penalty. Governor Brown has also asked for the death chamber to be dismantled.

Now the relatives of those who were killed by the criminals are furious.

They fear that justice will not be served and are angry that they have not had a say.

One death row inmate, Randy Lee Guzek, killed Rod and Lois Houser when he was 18. He shot Lois three times with a handgun and chased her up a staircase before firing a final shot.

Their daughter, Sue Shirley, said: 'I'm horrified and outraged and I don't know what this means. Will true life be true life?'

'All I know is that we never get to have a say,' she said, as reported in Oregon Live.

But in her announcement, Brown said victims experience 'pain and uncertainty' as they wait for decades while individuals sit on death row.

Just more EVIDENCE that the THEFT of elections is NATIONAL and FAR WORSE than even I know.

I mean that's one possibility, but it's also possible that Oregon is a polarized state (like so much of the country) with lefty areas and conservative areas. Did that possibility occur to you?

Now take full her pension, and benefits to pay for the care and feeding of these monsters.

Kate Brown said she would be touring the state to dance and spit on the graves of the men women and children killed by her beloved death row inmates.

“They are garbage to me”, she explained.

It’s much like Washington state: West of the range is uber lefty; east of it is pretty conservative. It is a very noticeable divide.

Seems like a waste of time since they haven’t killed anybody since 1997. Why bother?

Lol. Wow. That is serious anecdotal evidence. A couple from a small town gives you some opinion and that’s gospel. Lol.

Governor Ryan of Illinois did this as he was going out the door. Soon afterwords, he was the one in jail.

Nobody in Oregon will ever be executed again, so it makes sense to make it “official”. For me personally, a life sentence would be worse than death for me. While I do think that execution is justice, I can see where others disagree.

Both views can be argued from the Bible. A couple of pro capital punishment verses:

Genesis 9:6:

“Whoever sheds the blood of man,
by man shall his blood be shed,
for God made man in his own image.”

Romans 13:

1) Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.... 4) for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.

*****************************

Although earlier, in Genesis 4, Cain is not executed but is banished because he killed Able.

Since in Portland they barely arrest or charge anyone no matter how heinous and violent the crime, no biggie if murderers etc aren’t executed. Their pov, not mine.

And Brownstain was not elected in clean elections. There were two recall petitions, each time the demsheviks who “vetted” the signatures said too many were bogus.

A country with stolen elections is a country which is stolen from the citizens.

People who think criminals who deserve execution should have life in prison, please volunteer your own coin to keep them alive. I don’t want a penny of mine to go for their upkeep.

I lived in Eugene Oregon for over forty years and got an MBA in Finance from the University of Oregon (U of O) after I left active duty. There were howling protests over the Army ROTC at the U of O and expressions of concern by all the important people in the city. We who served were popularly regarded with contempt, disgust, and derision. I will always be regarded as a lunatic, drug addicted, baby killing fascist pig by an important, popular faction of my peers and their descendants.

During my 40 plus years there, I found that to be considered a citizen you had to despise veterans and the USA. I did not ascribe to that agenda and became a subject and along with the others who had no influence. Those of influence still availed themselves of every opportunity to express their convictions. While working at Lane County, I found out the new armory for the Army and Marine Corps had to be built on the other side of I-5 in Springfield. Later the Veteran’s Day parade was forced into Springfield by Eugene city government. When US forces went into Kuwait to drive out the Iraqis, a motel on Coburg Road put out its flags. They were forced to remove them because it was an illegal display of the American flag.

For contrast, a National Guard unit returned to Redmond and there a citizen arranged for hundreds of flags to line the main streets. When a National Guard unit returned to Eugene, I went to the airport to greet them. The police made me put a small American flag in my truck, because if I took into the terminal, I might use it as a weapon. Now Redmond Oregon is officially Flag City and displays about 1,700 flags on holidays. After we moved to Redmond, my wife and I joined the volunteers that put out and retrieved the American flags for holidays.

The state is dominated by those living in urban settings up and down the I-5 corridor.
