Park outdoors: Subaru recalls Ascent SUVs due to fire risk

If an owner notices or smells smoke around the dashboard or driver's foot well, they should shut off the engine and call a dealer or roadside assistance.

DETROIT — Subaru is telling the owners of nearly 272,000 SUVs in the U.S. to park them outdoors due to the risk of a fire.

The company is recalling the 2019 through 2022 Ascents after getting reports of two fires. There were no reports of injuries.

The company says a bolt that holds the ground terminal of a heater may not have been fastened properly during assembly.

That can cause the terminal and surrounding parts to melt, increasing the risk of fire.

Subaru says the Ascents should be parked away from structures and should not be left unattended with the engine running until repairs are made. If an owner notices or smells smoke around the dashboard or driver's foot well, they should shut off the engine and call a dealer or roadside assistance.

Dealers will replace the bolt and a ground wire and connector holder if necessary.

Subaru says owners will be contacted within 60 days. They can check if their Ascent is affected by entering their 17-digit vehicle identification number here:

Used to work on semiconductor production gear. Had similar problems. We set up one station with a potentiometer driven meter with instructions for the operator do dial it to a specific setpoint. Most operators set a different point.
When asked, they usually said ‘it works better there’.
The setting and meter did nothing...

“When ever I install these fuseholders, they didn’t feel tight enough, so I go around a couple of more times just to be sure.”

Yep. Seen that kinda crap many times while working in QA at a DoD facility overhauling Navy jets and engines.

We used to call people like that “shop floor engineers”.

Over 30 years I saw stuff that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I shoulda kept a journal......it would’ve made a great book that no one would believe was true.

To this day I’m amazed we never had a class A mishap and lost any aircrew......it really was a miracle.......and those aircraft fly over my house every day. SMH

Not a bad looking SUV. Too bad that it catches on fire.
....
They all pretty much look the same.
Yea, up until the mid-70s or so, various makes and models used to have distinctive styles and personalities.

It's all a product of marketing research, a unicar. Notice how politics is following the same data, we now have unicandidates and a uniparty.

This must be fake news. All the EV haters on FR tell me that only EVs are a fire risk.

Yeah - but dare to be DIFFERENT!

Take you new Ascent for a cheap $399 Earl Scheib paint job!
(I'd go with a medium magenta. Nothing too flashy.)

Production work can really be a study in human behavior can’t it?

My QA department discovered a shotpeener once not using the correct media.

When asked why he was using the incorrect media he stated he didn’t have what was called out in the manual so he used what he had.

Since this is US Navy aircraft parts I’m talking about the investigation got intense and got a lot of attention from civilian AND military big shots.

It didn’t take long for the shotpeener to drop his retirement papers. 😏

She actually thought she was doing a good job.

Nobody ever explained to her that you are supposed to ‘stop’ turning the wrench when it clicks. It wasn’t written in the Work Instructions. It just said, “Use torque wrench to install fuseholders.”

She believed that the wrench would somehow set the proper torque on the fuseholder regardless of how she used it.

After this, they bought a ‘breakover’ type torque wrench that would not allow you to use too much torque, it would just slip at the proper torque.................

The biggest reason I gravitated toward the PT Cruiser - and eventually bought a used one - was because of the distinctive retro look.

Now Chrysler, which became Chrysler-Fiat, is some Chinese company.

Ah yes.....”continuous process improvement “.......I know it well.

And I also know this well.....you should never underestimate someone like that’s ability to circumvent any idiot proofing efforts, no matter how airtight you think it is.......there’s always a better idiot! LoL!

And what’s amazing is that they all need repairs for similar things keeping their dealerships in business even as sales percentages remain relatively similar. Very seldom are there “breakout” models that exceed in most categories.

I have designed, maintained, installed industrial automation equipment for decades.
I have seen a magic knob, and the operators (low skill) would argue about the best setting for the knob. It was connected to nothing.
