If an owner notices or smells smoke around the dashboard or driver's foot well, they should shut off the engine and call a dealer or roadside assistance.
DETROIT — Subaru is telling the owners of nearly 272,000 SUVs in the U.S. to park them outdoors due to the risk of a fire.
The company is recalling the 2019 through 2022 Ascents after getting reports of two fires. There were no reports of injuries.
The company says a bolt that holds the ground terminal of a heater may not have been fastened properly during assembly.
That can cause the terminal and surrounding parts to melt, increasing the risk of fire.
Subaru says the Ascents should be parked away from structures and should not be left unattended with the engine running until repairs are made. If an owner notices or smells smoke around the dashboard or driver's foot well, they should shut off the engine and call a dealer or roadside assistance.
Dealers will replace the bolt and a ground wire and connector holder if necessary.
Subaru says owners will be contacted within 60 days. They can check if their Ascent is affected by entering their 17-digit vehicle identification number here:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Should the owner remove infants, pets, other passengers, prior to calling roadside assistance? Seems like it.
Possibly.......if you can’t accomplish tightening just one fastener maybe it’s time to move on. SMH
Yes, I always shut down the car and immediately exit when I detect a fire!
2023 Subaru Ascent -
They all pretty much look the same.
Article should have new headline:
The descent of the Ascent!
.
It's all about the styling of the grill and headlights that
they put on the front of the rectangular box.
It's important....

What’s that burning? I sense the scent of an Ascent.
And here I thought exterior color was the most important factor in design.
Having been a Calibration Tech for 30 years, calibrating torque wrenches and other things, I can tell you what happens if a uncertified tool is used or if it is a certified too that is misused.
Used to work in a factory that had US Navy contracts and one day the engineer brought me a torque wrench to check it out. It was still within calibration according to the sticker.
He watched as I checked it on the Torque Meter and it was fine, no problems.
He told me that the production assembly of a massive panel that had some waterproof military style fuseholders, about 30-40 of them, was breaking them at a near 80% rate.
These fuseholders were like $50 a piece. So he suspected the tool was faulty, but it was perfect.
So, he went back to the production assembly area and decided to witness the actual assembly of a panel.
The girl whose job it was to assemble the panel and fuseholders took the tool, a 3/8 ratchet style with a ‘click/slip’ mechanism that indicated the required torque had been applied, and proceeded to install the first fuseholder and it immediately cracked.
The engineer couldn’t believe what he had just seen.
The girl had taken the tool and installed the fuseholder according to the work instructions, BUT when it ‘clicked and slipped’ she didn’t stop, she just kept turning the wrench.
When asked why she did this, she replied, “When ever I install these fuseholders, they didn’t feel tight enough, so I go around a couple of more times just to be sure.”........................
So sorry Senior,,
No Habla Engles!
