Tesla Owner Says He Had to Pull Over Due to System Shutdown, Ends Up Trapped in Car - Takes Drastic Measures to Escape
Western Journal ^ | December 11, 2022 | Carson Choate

A British YouTuber was recently left stranded on the side of the road for hours after his Tesla shut down and trapped him inside.

Tom Exton, a YouTube personality who focuses on the collection of cars and watches, was traveling to London in the Tesla that he bought 5 days prior when the incident occurred.

Exton said he started out with close to a full charge and after only 15 minutes into his trip, his Model Y forced him to pull over, Business Insider reported.

He said on Twitter that the screen inside “glitched” and he “couldn’t do anything.” Minutes later “all power to the car was gone,” he told Insider.

Exton said he was left inside the “dark car in [the] pitch black on the side of a busy road in freezing temps, with [a] dying phone battery.”

Since Teslas require power to unlock, he said he “couldn’t open the door by conventional means,” and “had to use the emergency manual-override latch on the door.”

Doing so “somehow broke the driver’s window,” Exton said.

“In any car I’ve ever owned, even to this day I always keep a hammer under the seat.”

Particularly when you need an I-PAD to open the doors. What happens when you don’t have Internet coverage? That’s why a hammer is needed.

...but still, over 98% of the time, the Internet will be available, and the hammer won’t be needed.

At $60,000 on the low end you wouldn’t have much money left even if you took the deal.

“He opened the door with a latch? Why did it take him hours t figure that out?”

I can feel for the guy. I was in the lake once when my motor locked on the boat. All I had were these two wood sticks attached to the sides of the boat but there were no instructions. What to do?

As an aside, a scene in Idiocracy had new relevance today after I watched it again:

When they were driving to go to Costco and see the ‘time machine’, Not Sure’s barcode gets scanned as he’s waving his arms (he’s an escaped prisoner, so police response was triggered).

The next scene has Frito slowing to a stop exclaiming, “Turned off my battery!”

So, then...once again we’re just one step closer to true documentary status for what was supposed to be a comedic film.

The only things missing from the movie were prolific trannies.

I never have nor ever will own a car the doors of which I can’t open with a handle. My Nissan Centra(used) has electric windows, hence the hammer.

Hammers in a car have ...others uses too.

This was some sort of internal malfunction. There’s a photo of his screen and it shows 230 mi of remaining charge. So it had nothing to do with being under charged

Had the same problem with my 2013 Corvette. The issue is with power door locks. When the battery dies, they no worky. Initial reaction is panic and a few expletive's not deleted. 🙂

I didn't know about the manual emergency escape lever. But I had a convertible, so I was able to unlatch the front of the convertible top and just able to squeeze through the opening. Afterwards I looked in the manual and found the way to get out should it happen again. Of course it hasn't.

Jeremy Clarkson will tell you a hammer will fix anything that’s wrong with your car. If the hammer is using doesn’t fix it you simply need a larger one.

Thanks for the heads up. You know what a roller or straight bearing is?

You'll find them in the brake drums of cars.

With the merest toss of a roller bearing at any cars side window or rear wind shield said window and wind shield evaporates. Oddly when tossed at the front wind shield all it does is make that BB hole type mark. A buddy of mine who owns a junk yard showed me this years ago. Most amazing thing I ever saw.

That’s because the front windshield is composed of three layers, a film of strong transparent plastic between two pieces of glass. It’s to keep your head from exiting the car if you don’t use the safety belts.

LOL! I always remember that scene from the 1962 movie “The Longest Day’’ when a burly British beachmaster comes upon a stalled Bren Gun carrier and the British soldier trying to start it says, with a heavy Cockney accent, “Engine won’t start sir, full ‘o’ sea water I fink!’’

The beachmaster, who is holding a large cudgel loudly declares, “My old grandmother always said ‘’Anything mechanical just give it a good bash!’’

So he hits the vehicle one good shot and sure enough it starts.
