A British YouTuber was recently left stranded on the side of the road for hours after his Tesla shut down and trapped him inside.
Tom Exton, a YouTube personality who focuses on the collection of cars and watches, was traveling to London in the Tesla that he bought 5 days prior when the incident occurred.
Exton said he started out with close to a full charge and after only 15 minutes into his trip, his Model Y forced him to pull over, Business Insider reported.
He said on Twitter that the screen inside “glitched” and he “couldn’t do anything.” Minutes later “all power to the car was gone,” he told Insider.
Exton said he was left inside the “dark car in [the] pitch black on the side of a busy road in freezing temps, with [a] dying phone battery.”
Since Teslas require power to unlock, he said he “couldn’t open the door by conventional means,” and “had to use the emergency manual-override latch on the door.”
Doing so “somehow broke the driver’s window,” Exton said.

Why would ANY person get into a Tesla without a way of forcing his way out? What an Idiot!!!
Sounds like that is what the emergency release was for and it worked.
Technology is great until it stops working. What happens when it stops working? If it’s an escalator you simply walk up the stairs. If it’s an elevator you can die locked in a box for an indeterminate time. If it’s a parachute you die. If it’s an all electric car you can be locked in. If it’s a robot anything can happen and it probably won’t be good.
Could have been worse she could have been driving a Pinto.
Now those things know how to go up in flames bid time
Sorry, but I just don’t approve of electronic everything. Especially door locks and latches.
Drive by wire = Die by wire
At least it didn’t shut down and burst in to flames while he was trapped in it. So he’s got that going for him
Why is he complaining? He’s stopping Climate Change, right?
He opened the door with a latch? Why did it take him hours t figure that out?
He’s just lucky he wasn’t in North Dakota on a January night.
Or in Georgia during the summer, he’d be cooked, literally.
I thought that I was going to be reading a story about a Musk close call...
I knew that they had to have some kind of manual mechanism to open the doors, but like 80% of the Tesla, average gas car Joe knows nothing about.
Yeah, you’re trapped!
In any car I’ve ever owned, even to this day I always keep a hammer under the seat.
You could not give me enough money to get into one of those death traps.
no mechanical handle... brilliant
When is “manual override” a “drastic measure”
Sheesh. Recharge it at one of the numerous wind powered roadside charging facilities. Like some cell phones, you just have to be over the charger and not actually connected. Right? Oh, system failure not battery. And Tessie couldn’t sat link a fix? 🤔😂👍
I told you it was a fire trap
