Air travel drama: Tall passenger who didn't buy additional legroom is chewed out on flight

Very tall man encroached on other passengers' space, wouldn't allow a reclined seat

Users on the Reddit social media site have come to the defense of an airline traveler who informed a tall passenger during some apparently tense moments on board that he should have purchased additional legroom to accommodate his size — rather than infringing on others around him.

A Redditor who goes by the user name "Itchy-Smell8152" recently asked others in the subreddit "Am I the A*****e" (AITA) for their opinions about how he handled a tricky travel situation.

In essence, he was not permitted to recline his seat on an airplane because the passenger behind him was too tall to accommodate it

I’ve been that guy. Used to fly a lot and always begged for exit row or bulkhead seating. Once when I didn’t get it I nearly had my kneecaps dislocated by the passenger in front of me.

I wonder if there’s a case to be made that forcing tall (or fat) passengers to buy premium seats is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Retired now. Won’t ever fly again unless I hit the Megabucks and can buy my own Learjet. Last three trips Ohio to Idaho I drove.

I haven’t flown in a while. I didn’t think the seats reclined more than an inch. Like a joke. Or maybe I don’t know how to recline them correctly. Or was flying to cheap of seats to get the reclining ones. 😆

Does hypothyroidism spontaneously produce calories? If so, it is the cure for world hunger. Unless a fat person is held down and force fed calories, what they intake is their choice.

I didn’t say a word when the guy behind me kneed me in the back several times on a 4+ hour red eye on the trip back from Thanksgiving. Hellish hours. Instead of reclining, which I wanted to do but was unable because he pushed against me, I tried to use my tray table as a resting spot. It was awful. My first red eye, and it may well be my last, but did I say anything? No. It would’ve made matters worse, I’m sure. Do I wish he would’ve paid for one of the exit row seats? Yes, but I can’t force him. There were two rows of empty seats there.

I feel bad for larger people flying. They know their issues. I am not responsible for their problems and expect my seat area to be what I paid for. If it has a reclining seat, I paid for that.

I looked it up. Most people with hypothyroidism gain 5-10 pounds. And the weight gain can be solved with a change of diet.
Again, people who are fat are fat because they intake more calories than they burn. End of story. There is a fix for that and it doesn’t involve medication. It involves self discipline and hard work. And that…is a problem.

I flew back when people were passengers.

Ah, those were the days...

Still hated flying, but there was room, great service, pretty good food.

I’m not setting foot in a flying cattle car.

I’m fairly tall. Since retiring every place I want to go or person I want to see is well within driving distance.

I made the decision several years ago I will ONLY fly if I can afford to upgrade my seat. Once was upgraded to First Class from Stuttgart to Atlanta. OMG great. Then on my last leg home sat with my knees literally touching the seat in from of me the entire flight. But aaaah...first WAS awesome.

Not true. There is extra legroom in the front of the cattle section.

If you were sitting in the row in front of the Window Exit those seats either recline just a tiny bit or not at all because of the Window Exit.

a tall person should be requesting a seat on the wing

Obviously he was a tall white guy. Otherwise, nothing would have been said.

I strongly disagree! The straight up angle of the seats causes me very bad back pain. Just that little bit of recline is a lifesaver for me. You want to see a viral video? Take away my ability to recline on flights. If they just had the default position reclined just a couple of degrees, it wouldn’t be an issue.

I take great care to make sure I choose airlines and rows with reclining seats.

Before the thieving airlines started charging for things like exit seats will show the flight attendants my Fire department Id to get a exit seat with more leg room as am 6 ‘ 5”

The flight attendants were happy to someone responsible there in case of emergency

I’m 5’2”, and I feel squished when I fly. I can’t even imagine what you taller folks have to endure.

Did you ever sit behind someone reclining all the way back?

The extra legroom is in the Window Emergency Exit Rows. Done to provide extra room for egress in Emergencies.

Exactly. I try to get that seat on the rare occasion I fly. On some planes the very back seats have more legroom as do the very front. (Not first class)
