Los Angeles Rams quarterback Baker Mayfield pulled off one of the most improbable victories of his career Thursday night against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Mayfield, who was signed to the Rams less than three days ago, led Los Angeles to an incredible win after enduring a 13-point fourth quarter deficit. He led the Rams on a 98-yard drive that was capped off on a 23-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Van Jefferson with only 10 seconds left to win the game. The win was very impressive since Mayfield was studying the Rams’ playbook on his flight into town.
Fellow Rams quarterback John Wolford started the game, but head coach Sean McVay put in Mayfield in the second series. Mayfield completed a 21-yard pass on his first snap.
Mayfield celebrated the go-ahead touchdown by headbutting his teammate, Robert Rochell, without his helmet on.
Mayfield was also seen headbutting other teammates following his touchdown pass.
Earlier in the season, he did the same thing while playing for the Carolina Panthers.
Mayfield ought to be careful or else he’ll accidentally wind up in concussion protocol. I can understand the headbutting if he were wearing his helmet but to do it without one on is a risky move.
With that said, what a performance by the former number one overall pick on a short week. It was a truly gutsy performance.
“Thursday Night Football” commentators Kirk Herbstreit and Al Michaels marveled at Mayfield and the Rams’ comeback, contending that they have never seen or heard of any quarterback leading a team to a comeback after only being on the team for such a short time.
The Raiders tied an NFL record for blowing 13+ point leads in four games in a season.
I don’t know if he has serious talent around him. The Super Bowl run was built on a rental team. Most of those guys are gone. There’s a reason they’re 4-9. Saw it right in the first game when Von Miller (who was one of those rentals) sacked Stafford 5 times, cause he’s a Bill now. Don’t know if the Rams want him long term. They’ve gotten an injury bug at QB. Mayfield is good enough he’ll land somewhere though. Hopefully a team with talent. IMHO the Titans should make a run. They’re a great team held back by so-so QBing, Mayfield is definitely better than what they have.
