We have mountain lions here. Every couple months we get to see security cam vids of one trotting off with someone’s precious little cat or dog in their jaws.
We have mountain lions here too. And eastern coyotes which are hybrids with wolves. And we have bobcats. What we don’t have are lost cats or dogs. If yours is missing, it’s not lost, it’s being digested.
I have found my little domestic cats with lizards, field mice, birds, and bugs in their mouths. Not to mention all the cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys, fish, shrimp, I pay to have killed and canned for my cats enjoyment.
Best way to keep coyotes, other dogs, bears, mountain lions away from previous pets is a secure house, escape routes, and grounds. Even then, ones precious pet wants to escape and a predator gets ‘um.
A similar call occurs in the Spring when moose come into town to bask in lawn and farm field sprinklers. Fish & game responds fairly quickly. The primary hazard has occurred when a moose goes walking across the 4 lane city streets. A couple have been hit by cars.
