Peake hasn't been charged in the homicide as Travis fired first at Peake as he was running away. Travis was hit four times by Peake — once in the scrotum, twice in the chest and once in the bicep. Peake has been suspended from the NMSU basketball team while the three others who drove Peake away from the shooting scene and concealed the gun remain on the team and played the other night.

Peake and Travis were the only ones hit in the gun fight. One article said there were four bullets left in gun when it was recovered. Travis had four in his body. If it was a ten-shot magazine, there were two other shots. I know the police were searching for bullet marks on the walls of the buildings the next day.

The story is not particularly clear, but one explanation of the events described is that Peake, having been lured into an ambush, legally used a firearm in self defense, and went to his coach, who wrongly assumed the shooting was unjustified, and set about obstructing the police investigation.

I worked in Anacostia (the DC war zone) in 1991 (yes, I’m a cracker) during the crack craziness. I didn’t feel as apprehensive around blacks then as I do now in NM.

I live in the mountains outside Albuquerque. Only into town once a week. The road I’m on has one cop and five competitive shooters. We all trust each other. The local Sheriffs department wants to have the good guys on their side.

Years ago a paroled rapist and pedophile from Michigan moved out here into a trailer. It got set on fire. The Sheriff’s only comment “I’m glad the fire didn’t spread.”
