One of the victims' parents in the Idaho killings said police are investigating something "mail-related" in their ongoing search for the suspect who fatally stabbed four University of Idaho students last month.
The parents of Kaylee Goncalves spoke to Fox News on Sunday about the ongoing investigation and the updates they've received from police. Asked about the last time the parents talked with police, Steve Goncalves, Kaylee's father, told Fox host Lawrence Jones it was last week.
He also said that he and his wife were asked to sign a "waiver form" to allow police to investigate "something that was mail-related." Goncalves did not offer any further details on what police were investigating in regard to the mail.
His remarks come about three weeks after the killings, which occurred at a residence near the university. On November 13, officers with the local Moscow Police Department went to a home at 1122 King Road in response to a report about an unconscious person. The officers found the four dead students, identified as Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle.
"The Latah County Coroner confirmed the identity of the four murdered individuals and their cause and manner of death as homicide by stabbing," the police said in a statement. "The coroner stated the four victims were likely asleep, some had defensive wounds, and each was stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault."
Since the killings, police have not said anything about a suspect or person of interest, and no weapon has been found. However, the police earlier said that they believe a "fixed-blade knife" was used in the crime.

“It is curious how they are so sure it was only one person involved in the killings.”
Maybe they’re not tipping their hand.
I agree. Releasing the type of information can only aid the suspect(s). And the store owner releasing the information on the type of weapon used. Just crazy. Any information that is known only to the suspect(s) should never be released. I think that in our day of “instant” news, the media and the public just believe they have a right to know everything. And with the proliferation of “true crime” podcasts, it is only getting worse. I am involved in a case here in Oklahoma that has been ongoing for over 9 years. There was an episode on it in 2018 on “Up and Vanished” and now there is a podcast that is in about its 30th week. Sad thing is...everything that the TV show and the podcast have been spewing is wrong. Wrong suspects, wrong evidentiary information, wrong on every count except that two people are missing and presumed dead. Other than that, their narratives are wrong. Suspects are wrong. And if it can be solved, (close actually) all the false information and evidence and suspects they have thrown out will be used in the defense of the case. It’s a travesty. In truth, it’s obstruction of justice what those folks are doing.
Well, I kind of have a theory on that, I believe there is a BIG difference of opinion between LE and the Goncalves family. There is a possibility the investigators are still considering the ex boyfriend a strong suspect and because the family came out in full defense mode of the boyfriend very early, the dad is in denial, appears to be always right and digging in his heels There is too much behavioral evidence that the ex should be the prime suspect.
In 1995, I tried to involve myself with the detectives of the Keller, Texas PD in the death of my buddy. I was threatened with arrest if I attempted to show up at the Keller PD station.
Four months later I got a interview with the Tarrant County ADA and her investigator and presented a piece of evidence that I found in the middle of their crime scene after the house was released back to his wife.
Her Professional investigator was able to use the evidence to build a Capital Murder case which was successfull in prosecution.
The four Keller, Texas PD detectives were not invited to the trial due to neither the defense nor prosecution wanting their BS testimony.
In 1971 my childhood friend and distant relative was murdered. She was a sweet, quiet, frail person, from a prosperous dairy farming family. In her early twenties she married a popular local boy who was also from another prominent farming family. She was seven months pregnant when they found her body, in her home. She had been savagely raped, knifed, beaten and choked to death and her body staged with a candle inserted in her. The entire small community just felt horrible for the family and mostly her young husband. Her family stood behind him all the way even taking him with them to their winter vacation home in Florida to get away from the horror. Months later, he was charged with and confessed to the murder. It seems he was always the police suspect because the way the house was ransacked, how the drawers were pulled out etc. The police followed him and found he had a girlfriend which was his motive. During the secret investigation local clergy, teachers, relatives were questioned and everyone of them fully vouched for him, never saw an ounce of violence, sweet kind, church every Sunday and excited for the birth of his child, who incidentally was stabbed in her womb.
I’m not going to argue that families or friends can help in situations like you describe. But did you go public and tell the media what you found? That is my point. Keep quiet. Don’t blab evidence to the media.
Could “mail related” be actually “male related”?
Same weapon used on all four with same method. Only one person can hold the weapon. Without really strong evidence of more than one person being present, it’s a safe bet it was a single perpetrator.
Maybe a surveillance cam in the neighborhood only shows one person around in that time frame.
I believe that the detectives did not want to lose their CI’s.
*Post trial, all four detectives received public promotions for the case.
We can’t know what’s going on, whether or not the family was told to remain quiet. Or how aggressively it seems to the family the case is being investigated.
It is, sadly, not that uncommon these days for the process to be slow-walked if the perp(s) identity is of the “wrong kind”, ie a POC or other “disadvantaged” group. And we do know that a liberal town all too frequently equals a liberal city administration and subsequently a liberal police force, even if it’s by an order of the mayor.
Time will tell us if these factors are in play.
That’s awful. They should have been booted from the force. I’ve seen police want to protect informants, but never in a murder. And I will say, I’ve even seen private investigations solve cases. But not when they publically air everything they have uncovered. That is just way counter productive.
I think we can safely assume the police shared info with the family on the condition that it remain confidential. In my 37 plus years of being involved in criminal law, I’ve never seen otherwise. The only times I can remember the police being ok with family sharing info publicly was when the police shared bogus information with the hope that the family would share it to misdirect the perp.
Such a brutal, senseless act of violence. I really do hope the perp(s) is dealt with appropriately when convicted, as surely he will be. A swift death-by-stabbing would be my call.
According to a popular TV program, if a prime suspect is not identified in the first 48 hours, the probability of getting a murder conviction drops to about 10%.
I have heard that as well...............
Wow, what an absolutely horrific story about a truly evil person. That brings tears to my eyes for so many different reasons.
Well stated. I get that the family is distraught, but they need to be more careful with their statements.
“leave the investigating to the professionals who have the power of government and the courts to do their job.”
YGTBKM. Maybe 20 years ago you could trust cops to “do their jobs” but not anymore.

My inclination is, thus, that the forensic specialists likely know much more than they let on, and for excellent reasons of case building, accomplice i.d. and others, they choose to time pulling peeps in until it's most prudent to do so..
I feel for the frustrations, especially among fam and friends, however yes, this is a great time for folks w even a bit of info to avoid yakking to the press or friends.
