OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. -- A Destin Middle School health technician was arrested and charged Thursday with stealing prescription medicine from students.
27-year-old Makayla Crandall, of Niceville, is charged with three counts of grand theft of a controlled substance, five counts of child neglect, and one count of failure to maintain narcotics records.
According to a release, not only did Crandall steal medicine, she was also found in some instances replacing the stolen medication with aspirin or ALEVE.
Crandall had been employed since July.
A release states one of the students who visited Crandall daily began to notice differences in the color of her pills and told her mother. The mother then monitored differences in her child's behavior.
An Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer, as well as school employees, conducted an audit in October overseeing the school medicine cabinet.
The audit revealed at least 110 missing amphetamine/dexmethylphenidate pills from at least five students. A release states one bottle contained an ALEVE pill and another had seven pills later identified as aspirin.
According to a release, the investigation revealed that around the same September/October timeframe, two other parents say they had become concerned after noticing a resurfacing of behavioral issues with their children. During the audit, one of those student's medication bottles was found to contain aspirin, which the parent says the student is not to be administered.
A release also states, the mother of a third victim says she dropped off a bottle of Adderall for her daughter Sept. 29 but had to take her to the emergency room on Oct. 4 due to her erratic, unusual behavior.
Crandall had sole possession of the key to the medicine cabinet, according to a release.
A release says Crandall was unable to explain how student medications were missing or had been switched out.
Crandall was arrested and booked into Okaloosa County Jail on Thursday. She is held on $9,000 bond.
The Okaloosa County School District put out this statement Friday:
A contracted healthcare employee serving as the Health Technician at Destin Middle School has been arrested by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation into improper handling of student medication. Okaloosa County School District (OCSD) Leadership was notified by Destin Middle School Principal Dr. Belinda Small over a parent concern regarding the handling of a student’s medication on Monday, October 3rd, after school hours. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Children and Families, and Aveanna Healthcare, which provides employees to oversee the District’s school clinic operations, were all notified by OCSD leadership immediately after they became aware of the concern.
On Tuesday, October 4th, the individual was removed from the position and was not allowed to return to the school while law enforcement conducted its investigation. “As Superintendent, I am appalled by the allegations,” said Marcus Chambers. “We will work with authorities to ensure this individual, if guilty, is punished to the fullest extent of the law. We fully supported the efforts by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office throughout the investigation and have mandated that Aveanna put in place additional checks and balances with regard to dispensing student medicine in our school clinics. Parents should have absolute confidence that their child’s visit to the school clinic is handled professionally and accurately. Aveanna has been a good healthcare partner over a number of years and acted swiftly in this matter to address the District’s concerns.”

Now, the question is: Did she use the meds herself, or did she sell them on the street?...................
‘Crandall had been employed since July.’
Didn’t take her long to crash & burn.
My neighbor's daughter was sent to school with her rescue inhaler and Epi Pens in case of allergic reaction.
All of these were locked up in the school office and supposedly could only be accessed by the school nurse. At least that was the excuse they gave when she had a asthma attack and they would not let her have her inhaler but that is another story.
They provided the school with two unopened twin packs of Epi Pens. That would be four for those of you playing along at home. At the end of the year they got one in an opened pack back. Daughter had thankfully not needed the Epi Pen all year so they asked. And "shut up" the school replied.
I would have called the police and the DA office.................
Oh wow. ADHD medicine is one thing...going hyper is not going to kill you (behavior is likely what tipped the school off to the idiot described in the article). But you can die from asthma.
Hate to say it but some of the stupidest people I ever dealt with were either teachers or school administrators. It’s as if schools are a magnet for those types of people.
Not even the parents who had some really expensive drugs (not that Epi Pens are cheap) disappear.
No one wants CPS to show up at your door.
And the schools will do that.
My cynicism about government bureaucracies is hard won.

I bet she sold them.
Probably a little bit of both....................
Junk silver 90% is about 22 times face, currently.
VF and above all of them.
The only justice we got was that the pawn broker went out of business very fast when it got around what he had done.
No way he thought those coins were legitimate.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Aspirin can kill a person who is allergic.
This woman is evil.
They misspelled “unwilling”.
My old coin collection book of 50 cent pieces is sitting in my garage, untouched for almost 50 years. (Yes, I feel kind of guilty.)
After visiting the coin shop and its display case, I am inspired to dig it out.
Even at only 22 x face, each coin is $11. And many of mine were BU or U at the time. Ten is $110, and I have more. But converting to paper is a loser, so ...?
And gas was about 30 cents when I collected them. And it has been over $6 lately. So that’s about 20 times.
Maybe that coin book kept pace with inflation.
Next concern is that 1099-K form and $600.
Just redeem 50 coins a year. $550 is under the limit.
