Christine McVie, the co-lead vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist of Fleetwood Mac, has died aged 79 following a 'short illness', her family have revealed.
In a statement, McVie's family said she was 'a revered musician who was loved universally' and was surrounded by loved ones when she died.
'She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.
'We kindly ask that you respect the family's privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being.'
Her former bandmates said tonight they're devastated by the loss, describing her as 'the best friend anyone could have in their life'.
'She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure... She was the best musician anyone could have in their band. We were so lucky to have a life with her.
'Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.'
Stevie Nicks shared the statement to her own Twitter account this evening.
The British-American rock band was one of the most successful groups of all time, selling 100 million records globally.
McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971 as a permanent member, and the band achieved even greater popularity with the addition of Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in the mid-1970s.

Do you know what exemplify means?
We’re you dancing to crappy Rock music when Clinton won?
You’re really holding on to your liberal idols. Very defensive.
Do you know what “direct” means? Nice try backing up on your claim by trying to paint me with the liberal brush.
Look, I don’t need your help knowing you’re totally wrong.
Foreigner was one of the best English American bands.
Good point — they had a string of big hits spanning several years.
Again, you have an emotional attachment of some sort.
Makes you defensive.
If you don’t think there’s a direct line from Clinton winning in 1992 to today’s woke dictatorship, I don’t know where you think it came from.
I don’t think Fleetwood Mack can be blamed for societal decay. If you don’t either, then perhaps you might take more care with how you express yourself.
Spoiled children insist on the last word. I cede it to you, therefore.
God bless you.
