LA Cargo Theft: 91 arrested, $18 million worth of stolen train cargo recovered

LOS ANGELES - A year-long investigation into the theft of train cargo resulted in the arrest of 91 people, the Los Angeles Police Department announced.

Since July 2021, law enforcement agencies in Southern California, were investigating a series of train burglaries that occurred in Los Angeles.

Shocking images, taken in January 2022, showed thousands of torn up packages and boxes stretched along the Union Pacific rail lines east of Downtown Los Angeles.

Cargo thieves would break into the containers, as the trains slow down or stop in the area, go through packages and take what they can.

-- Ninety-one arrests... not exactly a small operation... nor was anybody trying to hide it.
-- $18 million of goods recovered... good bet that at least 10 times that wasn't recovered.

Fifty years ago, 60 minutes with Mike Wallace showed how this was done. In his interview the kids said the best haul they made was GUNS.

It has to reach that level of bad before the authorities begin thinking “Hey, we don’t look so good. We better do something.”

It’ll be interesting to see if the DA lets them go or proffers really low charges, like “trespassing on RR property.”
