I started buying half a cows directly from the ranchers.

And yet our local farmers can’t get anything for their cattle.

I grow hay for sale in Oklahoma. With our drought we got $80/bale. Some who waited to sell got over $100 bale. Cattle ranchers paid that.

Other costs have gone up as well.

Could be there's nothing "artificial" about beef going up. This time it's inevitable. Ranchers are having a hard time.

Right now beef is still under $4 per pound where I live. That means I can grill the equivalent of a Double Quarter Pounder for $2 in meat cost, and so can just about anyone else who chooses to. When beef approaches $20 might be when significant numbers of people start moving away from it.

So consider $20 per pound as a minimum to start getting people off of beef and maybe $40 to get beef to be a ‘luxury’ food, that you only eat once or twice a year as part of celebrations.

A guy I knew that lived in Puerto Rico told me when he grew up, lobster was so cheap that they were getting sick of eating it. Then he moved here.

Oh, wait. We’ll ALL be utilizing them in the future when Mother Government controls all manner of food production.

But, not on my farm, for as long as I’m able. ‘Chuck’ is thriving and growing fast. We just discovered our neighbor raises pork, so we signed up for a 1/2 this coming Fall.

I sure hope the Stasi don’t figure out what we’re up to before then! It’ll be Ann Frank all over again, but we’ll be hiding pigs, beef cattle and chickens in our attics and basement crawl spaces. ;)
